CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Sophomore Reagan Trumm led a balanced scoring attack with a career-high 20 points to lead five Catamounts in double figures as Western Carolina women's basketball picked up a season-opening 101-27 win over Agnes Scott on Monday night at Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center.
The 101 points scored marks the seventh time in program history that WCU has eclipsed the century mark in a game and the first since 2018 when Western Carolina dropped 114 against Warren Wilson.
Trumm connected on 7-of-12 field goal attempts including four 3-pointers to lead the Catamounts, adding four assists and three steals to her stat line. In her WCU debut, junior transfer Chelsea Wooten added 11 points while also tallying four assists and two steals. In her first collegiate game, freshman Tyra Robinson finished with 11 points and pulled down five rebounds.
Rounding out WCU's five in double figures, freshman Tyja Beans and graduate transfer Lonasia Brewer both added 10 points to the offensive output on Monday, as Beans added five steals. Ewa Kielar led the way on the glass with eight rebounds as she was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field. Jada Burton dished out a team-high seven assists as Bailey Trumm added six to her performance.
Agnes Scott was led by Laila Williams, who had eight points, while Erika McLeod and Lindsay Moore had six points apiece. McLeod led the way for the Scotties with six rebounds as Lindsay Moore dished out three assists.
Western Carolina (1-0) came out of the gates fast with a 15-to-2 run over the opening five minutes as Brewer and Zanoria Cruz led a balanced scoring attack in the opening frame. The Catamounts continued to heat up from the floor with a 15-3 spurt over the final 3:41 of the opening quarter, led by Reagan Trumm's five points, as WCU took a 31-5 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
The Catamounts continued kept the pressure up by outscoring the visiting Scotties 17-to-3 out of the gates in the second quarter, led by Wooten with a pair of triples that stretched the lead to 48-8 halfway through the second frame. WCU continued to shoot effectively from the floor on Monday down the stretch, connecting on 6-of-8 field goals in the final three minutes to take a 61-13 lead to the break.
The third quarter started slow offensively for the Catamounts, only attempting four field goals but connecting on three in the first four minutes to stretch the advantage to 69-17. The lowest-scoring quarter for WCU was capped with a 10-5 run over the final four minutes to make it 79-22 headed to the final 10 minutes.
The Catamounts outscored the Scotties 22-5 in the fourth quarter en route to the 101-27 victory with Reagan Trumm scoring seven points and Tamori Plantin chipping in five over the final frame.
WCU finished the game at 57.7% (41-of-71) and Agnes Scott posted just a 23.7% (9-of-38) performance from the floor. The Catamounts connected on seven, 3-pointers and finished 12-of-18 at the foul line as the guests went 7-of-11. WCU controlled the glass by the margin of 26, 45-19, including a 19-5 edge on the offensive boards. The Catamounts forced 28 Scotties turnovers, which included 21 steals. WCU had a 58-8 advantage in points in the paint and 47-2 points off turnovers.
The Catamounts continue their season-opening two-game home stand on Thursday night with a 7 p.m. start against Radford at Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center.
