Women's Basketball Hosts Southern Wesleyan in Pre-New Years Doubleheader

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – After a 10-day holiday break, Western Carolina women's basketball returns to action on Saturday afternoon by hosting Southern Wesleyan, an NCAA Division II program out of Conference Carolinas at 1 p.m. from Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center. The matchup with the Warriors will be the first part of a doubleheader as the men's basketball team hosts King University at 4 p.m. 
 
Saturday's action will be broadcast on ESPN+ (paid subscription required), with live stats and live audio from the Catamount Sports Network available at CatamountSports.com.

The Catamounts look to carry momentum from before the holiday break after defeating Queens 69-63 on December 20 in Charlotte. In the win, preseason All-Southern Conference selection senior Mya Love made her season-debut and scored a team-high 13 points in 17 minutes while Jada Burton added 12 points. Nicole Azar and Tamori Plantin both finished with 10 points in the victory to lead double-figure scoring for WCU. 
 
Wooten comes into Saturday's tilt atop the league in 3-pointers with 32 on the season, as she also leads the way in the SoCon with 2.7 made 3-pointers per game. Wooten is also 10th in scoring in the league with 11.3 points per game, highlighted by a season-high 29 points against USC Upstate in early December.
 
Jada Burton sits second in the SoCon with 59 assists, averaging 4.5 assists per game tied for second in the conference. Burton is also fourth in the league steals with 21, averaging 1.6 per contest. As a team, WCU is third in the league in field goal percentage (41.6%), led by Audrey Meyers at 56.9% (37-of-65). 
 
Southern Wesleyan, a D-II program based out of Central, S.C., sits with a 3-8 record thus far in the 2023-24 season as the Warriors fell in a league matchup with Chowan by the score of 84-75 in their last on-court action on December 16. The Warriors have already played exhibition matchups against Furman and Wofford out of the SoCon this season. 
 
Shelby Glance leads the Warriors with 11.2 points per game and's also averaging a team-high 6.1 rebounds per game. Glance is one of three players from Southern Wesleyan to be named to the league's Players to Watch, joining Lexi Greffen and Tristen Berry. Greffen leads the Warriors with 30 assists thus far. Asia Pearly is scoring 9.8 points per game while connecting on a team-high 52.4% of her field goals. 
 
Southern Wesleyan finished with a 9-20 record during the 2022-23 season, claiming all nine wins during Conference Carolinas' play last year. The Warriors were tabbed ninth in the 15-team Conference Carolinas preseason poll which includes North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee schools. 
 
WCU has taken both prior meetings from Southern Wesleyan, including a 66-46 decision in Cullowhee last December. In the December 30, 2022, matchup, Kyla Allison led the offensive attack against the Warriors with 20 points and nine rebounds in the win. 
 
Following Saturday's contest in Cullowhee, the Catamounts flip the calendar to the 2024 portion of the slate with a 2 p.m. tip on Sunday, January 7, against Montreat on Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center. The matchup with the Cavaliers will be shown on ESPN+ (paid subscription required), with live stats available on CatamountSports.com.
