Baseball Season-Opener Bumped to 2 pm First Pitch

Four-game series vs. Akron opens Friday afternoon in #CatamountCountry

Cullowhee, N.C. – Based on the projected weather forecasts for Friday, Feb. 17, the first pitch of Western Carolina baseball's season-opener against the Akron Zips at Childress Field / Hennon Stadium has been bumped earlier to a 2 p.m. start, officials at WCU announced today. Friday's game is the first for WCU under baseball alum and first-year head coach Alan Beck.

Following Friday's opener, the nonconference series continues with a Saturday doubleheader beginning at Noon with the second game to follow 45 minutes after the conclusion of game one. The series wraps up on Sunday with a 1 p.m. first pitch. Each game of the four-game season-opening series against Akron is scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN+ (paid subscription required) with live stats available online through a link on CatamountSports.com.

WCU hosts the Akron Zips out of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Feb. 17-19 as the Catamounts play 10 of their first 12 seasonal games at home. WCU and Akron have met on the baseball diamond just once – a 9-8 come-from-behind victory for the Catamounts in tournament action at McNair Field in Forest City, N.C., back in March 2011.

Western Carolina continues its clear-bag policy at all home athletic events including Catamount baseball. Fans are reminded that in accordance with stadium policies, no pets, umbrellas, coolers, or outside food and beverages are allowed within the stadium.
