Catamounts Compete in Panther Invitational This Weekend

Tournament hosted by Georgia State

CULLOWHEE, N.C. - Western Carolina softball travels to Atlanta, Georgia this weekend to compete in the Panther Invitational hosted by Georgia State.
 
The Catamounts will play Northern Iowa and Tennessee State on Friday, have a rematch with Tennessee State and face-off against Georgia State on Saturday and close out the tournament with its second game against Northern Iowa.

PANTHER INVITATIONAL - SERIES BREAKDOWNS:

» vs. Northern Iowa
  • This is the first meeting between the two programs.
  • Northern Iowa enters the Panther Invitational 0-6 and searching for its first win.
  • The Panthers are led by Faith Standerski who is hitting .357 with five hits, a home run and two RBI.
  • The Northern Iowa pitching staff carries a 5.00 ERA and teams are hitting .315 against them.
» vs. Tennessee State:
  • Western Carolina and Tennessee State meet for the third and fourth time this weekend. The Tigers hold a 2-0 record over the Catamounts.
  • The two teams last met in 2007 with TSU winning the doubleheader 4-3, 6-1.
  • The Tigers have opened the season 6-3 but have lost three of their last five.
  • Tennessee State will tangle with its second-straight team from the Southern Conference when the Tigers meet Western Carolina this weekend. On Feb. 22 TSU lost to Chattanooga 3-2.
  • Laila Armstrong is batting .423 for the Tigers with 11 hits, seven runs scored, a double and a triple.
  • TSU's pitching staff has a .254 ERA while opponents are batting .271 against them.
» at Georgia State:
  • Western Carolina and Georgia State meet for the 19th time on Saturday. The Panthers hold a 13-5 record over WCU.
  • Georgia State halted the Catamounts' three game win streak over them in 2022 when it took the second game of a doubleheader, 2-1, in Cullowhee. Western Carolina won the first game 5-1.
  • Georgia State enters their tournament 4-7 on the year.
  • The Panthers will play California Baptist Thursday before hosting their tournament over the weekend.
  • Bailee Richardson is leading the Panthers with a .414 batting average. She has 12 hits and 11 RBI to open the season.
  • The Georgia State pitching staff has struggled in the circle with a team ERA of 6.67. The pitching crew has given up 107 hits and 70 runs on the year.
Catamount Notes
  • Western Carolina is coming off a pair of mid-week losses to Presbyterian. The Catamounts, playing just their third and fourth games of the season, fell on the road to the Blue Hose 5-2, 6-5.
  • Senior hurler Jayme Eilers saw her first action in the circle since Feb. 25, 2022, when she started game one against Presbyterian. She went five innings and struck out nine.
  • Senior Samantha Reele is heating it up to open the season. The catcher is hitting .444 in the first four games with four hits, a run scored, three RBI and two doubles. The three RBI, in game two, by Reele is a career high.
  • In game one against Presbyterian sophomore Bethany Dobias had a career-high two RBI in the game.
  • After 11 days off, the Catamounts will now play seven games in five days.
