Box Score SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Western Carolina used three multi-run innings and had five players with multi-hit games as the Catamounts defeated Yale 8-4 on Friday in the opening game of the San Diego Classic.
WCU's mid-afternoon local time contest against Michigan State was delayed before first pitch due to rain and eventually canceled. The game will not be made up.
The Catamounts (6-9) got on the board in the first inning as
Brooklynn Brewington led off the game with a single and scored on a
Bailey Huneycutt triple. Huneycutt scored on the play thanks to a Yale error.
In the third inning, WCU again put two runs on the board thanks to a
Mattie Mentel sacrifice fly and a Yale error for a 4-0 advantage.
The Bulldogs got on the scoreboard with a Willa Ferrer solo home run in the top half of the fourth, but WCU answered in the home half of the inning as three runs scored as a result of a Yale error on a fielder's choice for a 7-1 advantage
Ferrer drove in two runs with a double in the fifth before a Brewington base hit got one of the runs back in the bottom of the frame. Yale added the game's final run on a groundout in the seventh.
Brewington went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, stretching her hitting streak to 12 games.
Samantha Reele also smacked three hits. Huneycutt's two hits moved her into sole possession of seventh place in WCU's career hits list with 158. The Oakboro, N.C. native finished with a single and a triple.
Myra Twitty and
Natalie Henry also finished with two hits, with Twitty reaching once on a double.
Jayme Eilers improved to 2-2 with the win, allowing one run on three hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
Makenzie Martin earned the save, pitching three complete innings.
Ferrer led the Bulldogs with two hits and drove in three of Yale's four runs. Maddie Latta also finished with two hits. She was also the losing pitcher, allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits in three innings of relief.
WCU and Yale meet again on Saturday at 1 p.m. Eastern/10 a.m. Pacific before the Catamounts wrap up the day against San Diego at 6 p.m. Eastern/3 p.m. Pacific.
