Field, Distance Performances Lead Catamounts Friday at Weems Baskin Invite

COLUMBIA, S.C. Javon Brown recorded a new personal best leap of 7.32 meters in the men's long jump invite division to highlight Western Carolina track & field action Friday at the outdoor season opening Weems Baskin Invitational hosted by South Carolina.
 
Brown's leap of 7.32 meters (24'00.25") topped his previous personal best of 7.28 meters last season. He won the event by 0.12 meters with the second-place competitor recording a top mark of 7.20 meters. Additionally, Brown's mark is the fifth-best outdoor long jump mark in program history.
 
The WCU men placed two student-athletes in the top five of the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Jonny Sherwood finished in third place with a time of 9:58.39. Will Mitchell was fifth, completing the race in 10:07.03.
 
Jonathan Lehe cleared a new outdoor personal best height of 4.40 meters (14'5.25") as he finished fourth place in the men's pole vault. Making his event debut, Jackson Livington finished fourth in the men's javelin with a throw of 56.43 meters (185'1").
 
Tyler Rodriguez finished in eighth place in the men's long jump with a mark of 6.96 meters (22'10").
 
Jalen Elwell finished 10th in the men's 5,000-meter run, completing the race in an outdoor-best 15:31.93.
 
In the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase, Sydney Runyan earned a third-place finish with a time of 12:33.88. Madelynn Duffield crossed the finish line in sixth as she made her event debut, finishing in 13:00.22.
 
Sydney Gallant cleared a personal best height of 3.40 meters (11'1.75") to finish fifth in the women's pole vault. Jennifer Wagner finished in ninth place after she cleared an outdoor personal best height of 3.20 meters (10'6").
 
Dami Shodeinde recorded a new personal best in the women's long jump thanks to her leap that measured 5.39 meters (17'8.25"). Shodeinde finished in seventh place.
 
Alesea Caldwell finished eighth in the women's 5,000-meter run, crossing the finish line in 19:05.21.
