CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Senior outfielder
Brooklynn Brewington led Western Carolina offensively for the second-straight day, but Furman used a big first inning to grab a lead it would never relinquish in earning a 9-1 victory over the Catamounts in five innings Sunday afternoon at the Catamount Softball Complex.
Furman improves to 10-18 overall and 3-0 in SoCon play while WCU drops to 9-15 and 0-3 in the league.
Furman plated five runs in their half of the first inning, three of which scored on a Hannah Poole three-run home run, her first of two on the day.
Brewington reached on a bunt single on the first pitch of the WCU first inning and scored on a two-out
Myra Twitty single.
Poole lined a two-run home run over the center field fence in the third inning. Furman added a pair of runs in the fourth inning for the final runs of the contest.
Brewington tallied a pair of singles, coming in the first and fifth innings as she went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Natalie Henry,
Myra Twitty, and
Samantha Reele each finished with a single.
Poole finished 2-for-3 with two runs and five RBI. Caitlin Goldwait, Slyvia Burroughs, and Alex Rose Molinar each collected two hits for the Paladins.
Sierra Tufts (6-6) earned the win, allowing one run on five hits in 5.0 innings.
Makenzie Martin (1-2) took the loss.
