CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Western Carolina softball team opens an eight-game California road trip on Tuesday with a single contest at UC San Diego at 4 p.m. ET (1 p.m. PT) followed by a Wednesday doubleheader at UC Riverside at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. (Noon and 2 p.m. PT). The Catamounts face both programs for the first time.

WCU is 3-8 on the season after dropping a doubleheader at USC Upstate on Wednesday. Brooklyn Brewington had four hits on the afternoon including a 3-for-4 performance in the first game of the doubleheader. Brewington leads the team offensively, hitting .351 with 13 hits and nine runs scored.
UC San Diego is 7-12 after being swept in a three-game weekend series against Boston College. Gabby Williams leads the Tritons with a .400 batting average while Deena Pederson has a team-best 21 hits. Williams also has a team-best 41.2 innings in the circle, striking out 42 batters with a 2-4 seasonal record.
UC Riverside is 10-9 overall heading into a Monday afternoon matchup with Boston College. Lauryn Garewal is hitting a team-high .420 with 21 hits, five doubles, and 28 total bases. Brooke Perez is 4-0 in the circle while Maddie Heinlin has a team-high 39 strikeouts.
The Catamounts continue their Golden State swing at the San Diego Classic this weekend, taking on Yale, Michigan State, and tournament host San Diego in five games spread between Friday, March 10 and Sunday, March 12.
