Tessa Juett threw a complete game shutout and
Brooklynn Brewington drove in the game's only run as Western Carolina began its California road swing with a 1-0 victory over UC San Diego on Tuesday afternoon.
WCU improves to 4-8 while UC San Diego falls to 7-13.
Savannah Baldwin led off the third inning with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and reached third on a sacrifice bunt. Baldwin scored as Bewington reached on a fielding error and advanced to second on the throw.
Juett went the distance, holding the Tritons to six hits with four walks and two strikeouts as she picked up both her second win and second shutout victory of the season. Juett and the Catamount defense worked to strand 11 Triton runners on base including a bases-loaded situation in the fourth inning.
In addition to Baldwin's base hit, Brewington stretched her hitting streak to nine games with a base hit in the fifth inning.
Myra Twitty and
Mattie Mentel both recorded base hits.
Morgan Eng led UC San Diego with two hits as the Tritons finished with six hits on the afternoon, all of them singles. Jada Cecil was charged with the loss, allowing one unearned run on four hits with 11 strikeouts in seven innings of work.
The Catamounts continue their road trip on Wednesday, venturing to UC Riverside for a doubleheader at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
