CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Western Carolina softball team will play five games in three days as the Catamounts compete in the San Diego Classic with two games apiece on Friday and Saturday and a single game Sunday.
WCU opens the tournament on Friday against Yale at 1 p.m. Eastern/10 a.m. Pacific and will face Michigan State at 6 p.m. Eastern/3 p.m. Pacific. A rematch against Yale at 1 p.m. Eastern/10 a.m. Pacific awaits on Saturday with two games against the host Toreros at 6 p.m. Eastern/3 p.m. Pacific on Saturday and Noon Eastern/9 a.m. Pacific on Sunday. The Catamounts have never played Yale or Michigan State and dropped their lone contest against San Diego in 2015.

The Catamounts enter the weekend with a 5-9 record after splitting a doubleheader Wednesday at UC Riverside. WCU took the opener 5-2 before dropping the nightcap by a 6-2 margin. On Tuesday, WCU opened its trip with a 1-0 victory over UC San Diego. Entering the weekend,
Brooklynn Brewington has an 11-game hitting streak including a pair of two-hit games on Wednesday.
Yale is 4-6 after winning two of five contests at The Spring Games last weekend in Madeira Beach, Fla. Willa Ferrer leads the team with a .381 batting average while Emma Taylor sports a team-best 2-3 record along with a 2.66 ERA.
Michigan State is 7-12 after dropping four of five games last weekend at the ASU Classic. Jessica Mabrey leads the Spartans with a .340 batting average and has a team-best 16 hits. Mandy Esman has driven in a team-best 10 runs along with five doubles. Ashley Miller has made a team-leading 14 appearances in the circle and is 6-7 with a 3.41 ERA.
San Diego is 7-16 after a 3-1 victory over UC San Diego on Thursday. Izzy Owen enters the weekend with a team-leading .388 batting average on the heels of a 3-for-3 afternoon against the Tritons. Owen paces the Toreros with 26 hits, six doubles, and 11 RBI. Courtney Rose and Madison Earnshaw lead the squad with 10 appearances each although San Diego has used five pitchers thus far this season.
The Catamounts remain on the road next week, venturing to Georgia State on Wednesday for a doubleheader beginning at Noon.
