CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Western Carolina women's tennis team set a school record on Saturday with their 14
th victory of the season thanks to a 4-3 triumph over Samford at the Catamount Athletics Complex.
WCU improves to 14-8 overall and 2-4 in the Southern Conference. The 14 wins eclipse the previous school benchmark of 13 set during the 2016 season. Samford drops to 12-7 and 4-3 in league play.
The Catamounts opened the match by winning a hard-fought doubles point. With Samford winning No. 1 doubles,
Jade Groen and
Andrea Redondo were 6-1 winners at No. 3 doubles.
Chloe Schwarz and Isabellla Sambola took No. 2 doubles 7-6 (7-4) to secure the early lead.
Leilany Ipunesso won No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-2 while Schwarz earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No 5 singles. After dropping the first set at No. 2 singles 4-6, Groen won the second set 6-1 and took a decisive 6-0 win in the third set to clinch the match for the Catamounts.
WCU has a short turnaround, closing out the 2023 regular season on Sunday against Chattanooga at 1 p.m.
