MACON, Ga. – Looking for the Southern Conference series sweep on Sunday afternoon, the Western Carolina softball team dropped a 5-0 decision to the Mercer Bears in the series finale between the teams at Sikes Field.
Mercer improves to 16-30 overall and 6-6 in Southern Conference play while WCU drops to 16-20 and 5-7. The Catamounts clinched the series with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.
The Bears got on the board in the first inning with a Bailey Ledvina solo home run. In the third inning, Mercer plated a run on a groundout and added a second on a WCU error for a 3-0 lead through three.
Alyssa Woods drove in two runs in the fifth inning with a single to cap the scoring.
Brooklynn Brewington finished 1-for-2 with WCU's lone hit of the game. The Catamounts stranded four runners on base.
Madi Wicker went 2-for-3 with a single and double to lead Mercer at the plate. Woods finished 1-for-3 with a single and two RBI. Bailey Ledvina was 1-for-3 with a home run and RBI. Sophie Sumner was 1-for-3 with a single and RBI. Mercer left nine runners on base.
Grace Taylor (10-6) earned the win, allowing one hit with three walks and a strikeout in 7.0 innings.
Tessa Juett (6-9) took the loss, surrendering three runs, two earned, on two hits with a walk and a strikeout in 2.0 innings.
Idle in the midweek after the rescheduled NC Central doubleheader, the Catamounts return home next weekend, hosting ETSU (12-30, 4-8 SoCon) in a three-game series beginning with a Saturday doubleheader at 1 p.m. The Buccaneers were idle this weekend and host Radford on Tuesday ahead of next weekend's conference series.
