CULLOWHEE, N.C. – After spending the first two weekends of Southern Conference play at home, the Western Carolina softball team hits the road this weekend to face Chattanooga in a three-game series. The Catamounts and Mocs are scheduled to begin their set with a doubleheader on Thursday at 4 p.m. followed by a single game on Friday at Noon.
The series was originally slated for a Friday/Saturday timeframe, but has been altered based on the long-range weather forecasts. So, too, altered are UTC's broadcast coverage plans; currently, live stats for each game will be available via a link on CatamountSports.com.
Game times are subject to change due to weather with updates posted on CatamountSports.com when available.
WCU is 12-17 overall and 2-4 in SoCon play after taking two of three last weekend's series at home against the preseason league favorite Samford. The Catamounts swept a doubleheader on Saturday with 7-5 and 4-1 victories before closing out the weekend with a close 5-4 setback in Sunday's finale.
Fifth-year senior
Bailey Huneycutt earned the Southern Conference Player of the Week award for the third time in her career on Monday. The Oakboro, N.C., native hit .533 in five games last week. She tallied eight hits and scored seven runs. In WCU's doubleheader split against Radford in the midweek on March 29, Huneycutt finished 3-for-7 with three runs scored including a solo home run. In the process, she became the program leader with 111 runs scored in her career, besting the previous mark of 110.
Huneycutt played an integral part in WCU's doubleheader sweep of Samford on April 1, going 2-for-2 with three runs scored in a 7-5 win in the opening game of the series, and drove in all four runs including the game-winning, three-run home run as part of a 4-1 WCU victory in the nightcap.
Chattanooga is 15-16 overall leading into a nonconference doubleheader at Georgia State on Wednesday. The Mocs are 0-3 in league play after being swept at Mercer last weekend. A perennial power in the SoCon, UTC was picked third in the SoCon preseason poll and put five players on the preseason All-SoCon team including a pair of first-team honorees.
The Mocs enter the week with the league's second-best team batting average at .270 and the third-best team ERA at 3.29 as a staff, limiting opponents to a SoCon-leading .232 batting average against. Entering play on Wednesday, UTC has a SoCon-best 198 strikeouts in the circle.
Following the weekend series, the Catamounts are idle until April 18 when they face former SoCon archrival Appalachian State at 4 p.m.
