CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Western Carolina evened the score on
Isabella DeMarco's team-leading sixth goal of the season, but Furman tallied the game-winning marker in the final 15 minutes of the match to escape with a 2-1 victory over the Catamounts on Sunday afternoon at the Catamount Athletics Complex.
Furman improves to 5-3-2 overall and 1-0-1 in Southern Conference play while WCU drops to 4-3-3 and 1-1.
"Today's result was disappointing," said WCU head coach
Chad Miller. "We talked at halftime about how important the first 15 minutes of the second half would be and we were able to get on the board. Although today is disappointing, we'll learn from it and there are a lot of games left this conference season."
WCU had two great chances in the early stages of the opening half.
Emma Soucy's bounced a shot off the post in the 18th minute and a booming shot by
Naya Marcil just glanced off the crossbar in the 29th minute.
Furman scored the first goal of the match in the 39th minute. Madison Luckett sent a ball into the box on a corner kick and where it was headed down by Ava King. After bouncing off several players, Cambelle Roberson controlled the loose ball and kicked it into the yawning cage for her first goal of the year and a 1-0 Paladin lead.
DeMarco and
Naya Marcil, who entered the match leading WCU in points, teamed up for the equalizer in the second half. Marcil played a ball from midfield to DeMarco, who corralled the pass and weaved through a trio of Furman defenders before firing a shot into the top corner of the goal to even the match at the 61:24 mark.
Norah Roller scored the game-winning goal for Furman in the 76th minute. As a Catamount defender fell, Roller controlled the loose ball before netting her third goal of the year.
WCU held a solid 16-8 advantage in shots, firing eight shots in both halves. Goalkeeper
Leanne Trudel was credited with one save. Addison Corn made four saves for Furman with an additional save on a block by a defender.
