GAME NOTES

Western Carolina looks to rebound from an 84-69 defeat in its SoCon opener against Furman on Thursday night. Junior Chelsea Wooten twice pulled WCU to within four points inside the final four minutes, but Furman withstood the rally and pulled away late to down the Catamounts. Senior Mya Love led three Catamounts in double figures with 12 points off the bench in the setback while Wooten and Lonasia Brewer both chipped in 11.

Wooten leads the conference in three-point shooting including 3-pointers made (40), treys per game (2.7) and 3-point field goal percentage (29.2%). She's had 10 games with multiple threes, including a season-high eight against USC Upstate. She is the only player in the conference to eclipse 40 triples thus far in the 2023-24 season.

Jada Burton ranks third in the league with 63 assists, averaging 3.9 per contest, also placing her third amongst SoCon players. Burton is tied for third in assist-to-turnover ratio at 1.1. She is tied for fourth in steals with 23 on the year. As a team, WCU ranks second in assists (232) and third in field goal percentage (41.9%).

Wofford enters play on Saturday with an 8-7 record as the Terriers suffered a 67-58 defeat to UNCG in its league opener on Thursday. Wofford has defended its home court in the 2023-24 season with a 7-1 mark at home, but are 1-6 away from Spartanburg. Wofford and WCU have four common opponents thus far in the 2023-24 season. Wofford finished with a 4-0 record with wins over UNCW, N.C. Central, Southern Wesleyan, and UNC Asheville. WCU tallied a win over SWU and UNCW among those four common opponents.

SoCon Preseason Player of Year selection and five-time Player of the Week recipient Rachael Rose leads the Terriers, averaging 20.4 points per game and 8.6 rebounds per game. Rose has tallied 10 games with 20+ points, including a season-high 28 against Bellarmine and UNC Asheville in back-to-back games. Maddie Heiss is averaging 13.2 points per contest. Evangelia Paulk is second on the team in rebounding with 7.3 rebounds per game.

Wofford finished the 2022-23 campaign with a 22-10 record including 10-4 in league play as the Terriers fell to Chattanooga in the SoCon finals last year. Wofford advanced to the women's NIT, ultimately falling 66-63 to SEC foe Florida. The Terriers were tabbed fourth in the preseason coaches poll and third in the media poll, receiving three first-place votes from the media members before the season.

The Catamounts and Terriers matchup on Saturday for the 62nd time with WCU holding a 36-25 edge in the all-time series. Wofford claimed two of the three matchups a season ago, including a 71-56 result in the SoCon tournament. WCU has won two of the past three meetings against Wofford in Cullowhee including a 53-49 decision last January.

In the three matchups last season, Kyla Allison led the way for WCU, averaging 15.7 points/game as she connected on a team-high seven threes. She posted a 22-point performance as she played the full 40 minutes in the home win over the Terriers last season. Mya Love finished with 10.7 points per game, including two double-figure scoring outputs.

Following Saturday's contest in Cullowhee, the Catamounts hit the road for the first time in nearly a month as WCU heads to Birmingham for a 7 p.m. EST tip against Samford on Thursday, January 18, from the Pete Hanna Center. Samford sits at 8-8 as the Bulldogs fell 57-40 to Chattanooga to begin league play on Thursday and travel to Chattanooga on Saturday before welcoming in WCU.
