Women's Basketball Falls in League Battle with Wofford

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Senior Mya Love posted a season-high 15 points, but Western Carolina women's basketball was unable to overcome 12 3-pointers from the visiting Terriers as Wofford claimed the 75-56 conference victory on Saturday afternoon on Ingles Court at the Ramsey Center.

"Disappointed in the outcome today.   Our mental and physical efforts did not meet the standards we have set for WCU Women's Basketball," commented Head Coach Kiley Hill. " We will regroup and improve to perform the way we should for our fans, boosters, and alumni we represent."

Love was 5-of-8 from the field and made 5-of-6 at the free throw line to lead WCU off the bench. Chelsea Wooten added 11 points including a pair from beyond the arc to increase her season total to 42 threes. Tyja Beans filled the stat sheet off the bench, tallying eight points and five rebounds. Zanoria Cruz led the defensive performance for Western Carolina with six rebounds.

Wofford had three players reach double figures, led by SoCon Preseason Player of the Year Rachael Rose, who finished with a game-high 33 points, connecting on 12-of-17 field goals and four 3-pointers. Rose also added six rebounds, six assists, and a pair of steals. Annabelle Schultz tallied 17 points including five threes - four in the first quarter alone that helped the Terriers gain the early edge.

Maddie Heiss rounded out the double-figure scoring for the Terriers, tallying 11 points in the contest. Indiya Clarke led Wofford on the glass with 10 rebounds, including five on the offensive end.

Wofford (9-7, 1-1 SoCon) came out of the gates fast on Saturday with a 12-3 run, connecting on four early threes to gain the advantage. WCU chipped away at the deficit with four of the next six points before five straight from the guests stretched it back to a 12-point lead at 19-7.

Western Carolina (5-12, 0-2 SoCon) rattled off a 7-2 run over the next two minutes led by Love and Lonasia Brewer before a Terriers three late made it 24-14 after one quarter.

The guests started the second frame much like the opening 10 minutes, using a 10-2 burst over the opening 3:30 in the quarter to stretch the advantage to 18, 34-16. The Catamounts fought back with a 6-3 run over the ensuing three minutes before the Terriers closed scoring the half's final eight points to claim a 45-22 lead at the intermission.

Wofford began the third quarter with an 8-4 spurt which allowed the margin to swell to 27, 53-26. Wooten stopped the burst with a 3-pointer before a 7-4 run pushed the deficit back to 27. The two teams remained tight, trading points between the free throw line, which led to Wofford leading 66-38 and heading to the fourth quarter.

The guests opened the fourth on a 7-3 run to make it 73-41 with 7:41 to play before WCU was able to close the game on a 15-2 run that cut the margin to 19, 75-56, but the Terriers were able to claim Saturday's league win.

Wofford finished the game shooting 45.8% (27-of-59) compared to 35.8% (19-of-53) for WCU. The Terriers controlled the deep ball, connecting on 12 triples compared to four for the Catamounts. Both teams matched each other on the glass with 34 rebounds, as Wofford had eight offensive and 26 defensive, while WCU pulled down nine offensive and 25 defensive.

The Terriers had 12 assists, while Western Carolina tallied nine helpers. Wofford forced 17 turnovers, which turned into 21 points compared to 10 points off of 17 giveaways for WCU. The guests had a slight edge in points in the paint, while Western Carolina had a 31-9 edge in bench scoring, led by Love with 15.

The Catamounts hit the road for the first time in nearly a month as WCU heads to Birmingham, Ala., for a 7 p.m. EST tip against Samford on Thursday, January 18, from the Pete Hanna Center. Samford sits at 8-9 as the Bulldogs fell 75-52 to Chattanooga on Saturday in league play. Samford is winless to begin SoCon play.
