Cullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina University aims to keep Catamount Nation abreast of any schedule changes and updates on upcoming and scheduled events across Catamount Athletics following the effects of Hurricane Helene on western North Carolina and the Southeast.
Below are schedule updates for events scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 3 through Tuesday, Oct. 8, for the various Catamount Athletics teams including a statement from WCU about Saturday's home football game against Wofford.
While Western Carolina University and the immediate Cullowhee area were fortunate to avoid many of the hardships, we ask Catamount Nation to continue to be courteous and respectful of the ongoing recovery efforts in many of the communities surrounding our campus in Western North Carolina. Please heed the instruction from state officials including the North Carolina Department of Transportation about road conditions and travel restrictions.
Statement from Western Carolina University:
WCU will play home game against Wofford without spectators
Due to Jackson County, North Carolina's continued State of Emergency, Western Carolina University football will play their scheduled home game against Wofford on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 2:30 p.m. without spectators.
There are still rescue and recovery efforts happening around our region and the NC Department of Transportation has requested everyone in the area keep roads clear for emergency and disaster relief vehicles to get to the hardest hit areas.
Campus officials are also sensitive to the impact this storm has had on our local community and the scarcity of resources in Jackson County, including water, food, electricity and fuel, and do not want to take away those much-needed resources to host a typical game-day experience that our fans are used to in Cullowhee. Should conditions change, the university will provide an update.
The university understands that our fans will be disappointed, but we encourage our fans to channel their Catamount spirit in helping those who have been impacted by this historic storm.
