Cullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina's nonconference men's basketball game against ACC foe Florida State originally scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 27, at the Harrah's Cherokee Center in Asheville has been rescheduled due to regional damage and relief efforts associated with Hurricane Helene. The Catamounts and Seminoles will now meet on Tues., Nov. 26, at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center on the FSU campus in Tallahassee, Fla. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Florida State joins Wake Forest (Nov. 19) as the second ACC school on Western Carolina's 2024-25 nonconference schedule. The Catamounts also face SEC counterpart Tennessee (Dec. 17), which advanced to the Elite 8 a season ago, and Sweet 16 participant Marquette (Nov. 30) as part of a difficult out-of-conference slate.
Western Carolina and Florida State have met four times before this season's scheduled pre-holiday tilt with the Seminoles claiming three of the previous four matchups. The Seminoles earned a 79-74 win back in November of 2019 in Tallahassee in the most recent series meeting. The Catamounts were led in that setback by Mason Faulkner who scored 21 points and dished out seven assists for WCU.
WCU's lone victory in the head-to-head series came on the back end of a two-game Sunshine State road jaunt in December 2001. WCU Hall of Famer Kevin Martin's double-double effort included scoring eight of his game-high 19 points to spur a 26-to-9 finish over the final four minutes to lead the Catamounts to the 79-69 upset over the Seminoles at the then-named Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center. Willie Freeman posted a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, while Cory Largent and Kori Hatcher chipped in 13 and 12 points, respectively, in WCU's second win over an ACC opponent.
Florida State represents the 13th team the Catamounts have faced from the now-18 team conference. WCU has faced the likes of Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami (Fla.), North Carolina, N.C. State, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, newly added SMU, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest to go along with FSU.
The Catamounts open their road slate on Friday, Nov. 8, with a trip to Charlotte to battle Queens University (1-0) in the first game of the ASUN-SoCon Challenge. The Royals began their 2024-25 season with a 90-39 victory on Monday night over NCAA D-III opposition Lynchburg out of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. The matchup with the Royals will be shown on ESPN+ (paid subscription required) with live streaming audio from the Catamount Sports Network and live stats available on CatamountSports.com.
