Challenging 2025 Slate Awaits Catamount Softball

12/12/2024 11:30:00 AM

CULLOWHEE, N.C. – Featuring six NCAA tournament teams and a combined 22 home games at the Catamount Softball Complex, the Western Carolina softball team announced its 2025 schedule on Thursday. The home slate includes hosting the Catamount Classic early-season tournament in late February into early March.

The Catamounts are currently slated to face a trio of teams that finished 2024 ranked inside the Top 25 in the USA Today/NFCA Top 25 Coaches Poll. Ninth-ranked Tennessee, No. 14 Georgia, and No. 23 Boston offer opposition, two as part of the four teams out of the SEC and Big Ten conferences on the ledger.

WCU will be challenged in 2025, playing 10 squads that eclipsed 30 wins during the 2024 campaign, five teams with 40+ victories. A total of 12 teams finished above .500.

Western Carolina's 2025 schedule begins with a trip to the Sunshine State to battle in the River City Leadoff, hosted on North Florida's campus in Jacksonville, Fla. The three-day tournament starts on February 7, and the Catamounts face Jacksonville and North Florida for a total of five games.

The competition ramps up on the second weekend of action as the Catamounts travel to the Georgia Classic hosted by the University of Georgia in Athens. The field features a pair of NCAA tournament teams in UGA and Michigan and includes Big Ten foe Michigan State and Longwood over the three-day tournament.

WCU closes out the season-long 13-game road swing with a doubleheader in Boiling Springs on February 19 against Gardner-Webb before traveling to Atlanta on February 26 for a twin bill against Georgia State.

Western Carolina opens the home portion of its schedule with the Catamount Classic, which commences on February 28 on campus in Cullowhee. The Catamounts will welcome Presbyterian, N.C. A&T, and Merrimack to the Catamount Softball Complex. Over the three-day event, WCU is slated to face the Warriors and Aggies twice and battle the Blue Hose once.

The Catamounts hit the road for the final time in March with a doubleheader against Presbyterian on March 4 before heading to Rock Hill for a three-day tournament hosted by Winthrop. The tournament with the Eagles will include Boston and Norfolk State, along with the hosts.

WCU opens a 12-game homestand on March 18, first with a doubleheader against Gardner-Webb. The following afternoon, they will battle Tulsa out of the American Athletic Conference in a pair of matchups.

The Catamounts begin Southern Conference play on March 22 and 23, with a three-game league slate in Cullowhee against ETSU. The home stretch continues with a single game against Queens before welcoming in Samford on March 29 and 30 for a three-game conference series that concludes the month of March for WCU.

The calendar flips to April with a four-game road swing, beginning with a nonconference showdown against Tennessee (April 1). The Catamounts remain in the Volunteer State for a conference series against Chattanooga (April 5-6). The first home series in April comes in when Wofford – just in its second season of competition – makes its first trip to Cullowhee on April 12-13 before the Catamounts return to the road on April 15 to battle USC Upstate in a doubleheader.

The final road series in April sees WCU travel to Macon on Easter weekend to battle Mercer on April 18-19. The Catamounts will honor its 2025 senior class as part of its three-game series with Furman (April 26-27).

WCU closes out SoCon play with a trip to Greensboro to battle UNCG on May 3-4 for the regular season finale for both schools.

Hosted by Wofford, the 2025 Southern Conference Softball Championship is scheduled for May 7-10. The winner will earn the SoCon's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
