AC Carter Earns SoCon Player of The Week Honors

Cullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina graduate transfer forward AC Carter was today named the Southern Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for her weekly performance that included her first career double-double in the road win at Queens.

The award is the first weekly accolade of the season for the Catamounts and the first of Carter's career. It is also WCU's first Player of the Week honor since Jewel Small earned the accolade in 2019.  The SoCon's weekly awards are selected and announced by the league office from nominations submitted by the media relations or communications personnel at each member institution.

Carter was one of four SoCon student-athletes to record a double-double in nonconference play last week – but nearly came away with a triple-double after dishing out a conference-best weekly total of eight assists in the game against Queens. While fellow Catamount Tyja Beans led the offensive output of the SoCon's double-double efforts with a 19-point outburst, Carter was the only one of the four to post more than 10 rebounds as she finished with a line of 16 points, 14 rebounds, and eight assists. Additionally, she posted a conference-leading total of three blocked shots and was the only SoCon player to record more than one in last week's action.

Already one of the most productive players in the conference, Carter has made quite an impression during her time in Cullowhee. The Atlanta, Ga., product currently leads the SoCon in points per game with a 14.4 average, the only mark above 13.2 in the SoCon. She leads the conference in total scoring as well with 158 points despite playing one fewer game than those ranked No. 2-4.  Her 6.4 rebounds per game also rank her ninth in the conference.

Carter and the Catamounts remain on the road this week visiting Murray State in Kentucky. Tip-off with the Racers is set for 6 p.m. CST / 7 p.m. EST on Thursday, Dec. 19. WCU then returns to the mountains to battle the UNC Asheville Bulldogs on Saturday, Dec. 21 with a 4 p.m. tip to close out the pre-Christmas slate.
