Catamounts Fall in Series Opener at Florida State, 8-2

WCU’s early lead does not hold up in Friday’s road loss

Tallahassee, Fla.Jack Spyke delivered a run-scoring double in the first inning and Trent Turner singled home a run in the second as Western Carolina twice led in Friday's series opener at ACC-foe Florida State. However, the Seminoles scored seven unanswered runs including pulling ahead with a two-spot in the home half of the second to hand the Catamounts an 8-2 loss at Dick Howser Stadium.

The nonconference series continues Saturday with a 2 p.m. first pitch on Mike Martin Field. The game is slated to be broadcast on the ACC Network Extra (paid subscription required) with live stats available online at CatamountSports.com.

Western Carolina's five base hits were scattered between five different players with Spyke providing the lone extra-base hit. He reached base a team-best three times in the loss, drawing a pair of HBPs. Turner finished 1-for-4 with an RBI single, with Zach Ketterman reaching base twice with a single and a walk.

FSU's Cam Smith led three Seminoles with multi-hit games, reaching four times in a 3-for-4 effort with an HBP and an RBI. Jaime Ferrer (2-for-5) was credited with two hits including a double while Drew Faurot posted a pair of extra-base hits – a double and a home run – in a 2-for-4, two RBI effort.

Ketterman drove an infield single to second base in the first inning with a throwing error allowing him to move into scoring position. Two batters later, Spyke doubled to center to plate the game's first run. In the home half of the frame, a single and an error put Cam Smith into scoring position where he matriculated home thanks to a wild pitch and an RBI ground out to tie the game at one after one.

In the top of the second, Cole Jones drew a one-out walk with a failed pick-off attempt pushing him into scoring position at second. Turner then delivered a two-out single into left field to again put the Catamounts in front, 2-1.

Florida State (4-0) took the lead for what would prove to be for good in the home half of the second inning. Following a lead-off ground out, three consecutive Seminoles reached with McGwire Holbrook singling home the game-tying run. DeAmex Ross then plated the eventual game-winning run on a sacrifice fly as Alex Lodise crossed home for the 3-2 lead.

Florida State tacked on solo runs in both the fourth and fifth innings pushed the home squad's lead to three, 5-2. Then in the sixth, the Seminoles recorded three insurance markers as they capitalized on WCU errors and a dropped third strike on a wild pitch. Drew Faurot delivered the big swing with a two-run home run to provide the final tally.

Starter Spenser Hamblen (1-1) took the loss for the Catamounts, tagged for five runs over his four-inning start with a strikeout against four walks. Gavin Mortenson struck out one and Dusty Revis fanned two both in an inning of work. Former FSU transfer and Catamount legacy Cole Beverlin tossed the final two innings, striking out one to work around a single, a walk, and a HBP.

Reigning ACC Pitcher of the Week Cam Leiter (2-0) struck out eight over five innings, allowing two runs on four hits with three walks and a hit batter. Ben Barrett struck out three over three innings of one-hit, scoreless relief with Noah Short working around a walk with a strikeout in tossing the final frame.

The series continues Saturday at 2 p.m., before concluding Sunday with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
