Tennis Drops Neutral Match with Wake Forest

Box Score

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Playing the nationally-ranked Demon Deacons on a neutral court, Andrea Redondo headlined a scrappy effort on Sunday as Western Carolina battled before ultimately falling 6-1 to No. 35 Wake Forest at the Mickel Tennis Center.

Wake swept a doubleheader against a pair of Southern Conference teams, blanking Furman 7-0 earlier in the day.

Two battles on the doubles courts were pushed to an extra point as the pairing of Isabella Sambola and Angela Perez on the first court and Jade Groen and Madison Schwarz on the second both evened their sets at 5 all. Unfortunately, the two Catamount couplings dropped the doubles matchups 7-5 as the Demon Deacons claimed the point.

Andrea Redondo and Wake Forest's Mia Ahmad went blow-for-blow at the No. 5 flight in the singles matchups, but it was Redondo who took the early set one win by a score of 7-5. After claiming the initial victory, Redondo cruised to take the point for the Catamounts in a 6-2 set two decision.

On the second court, Jade Groen took the initial advantage after also fighting to a 7-5 set one win but was forced to a ten-point tiebreaker by Brooke Killingsworth, who earned the final point of the day for the Demon Deacons. Groen moves to an 8-5 record on the year, but three of her last four losses have come in tiebreakers.

The Catamounts return to the Catamount Athletic Complex to host Mercer on Wednesday (March 13) afternoon for a midweek SoCon bout. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m.
