Catamounts Fight but Drop Non-Conference Matchup with UNC Asheville

Cullowhee, N.C. -- Jade Groen picked up her third straight 2-0 match win and Angela Perez scored her first straight-set victory since the Catamount road win at Gardner-Webb, but the Western Carolina women's tennis team dropped a 4-2 decision to UNC Asheville on Tuesday afternoon at the Catamount Athletics Complex.

While the home team ultimately fell on the day, Jade Groen and Madison Schwarz picked up their third straight win on the doubles courts to open play in WCU's final nonconference match of the season. The duo put forth an emphatic effort on the second court, storming away with a 6-0 set victory in under 20 minutes. The doubles win was Groen's eleventh and Schwarz's tenth of the season. However, the Bulldogs would come away with strong showings of their own on the first and third courts, winning both matchups in 6-1 sets to take the first point of the day.

On the singles courts, Groen earned her team-leading eleventh win of the season and her tenth straight-set victory with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Louise Booker on the second court. The sophomore's win evened the score at one all before Isabella Sambola and Andrea Redondo dropped hard-fought matches with Redondo forcing a seven-point tiebreaker in her first set. Angela Perez fought through a tiebreaker of her own in her first set, claiming a 7-6 (7-5) victory before pushing to a 6-3 final in set two to take the final point of the day for the Purple and Gold.

Dasha Osadova's match on the sixth court was the final of the day as the sophomore from London dropped her match with final scores of 7-5 and 7-6 (7-2) as the Bulldogs took the hard-fought 4-2 win.

Western Carolina hosts a familiar Southern Conference foe as the Furman Paladins make the trip from Greenville for a Sunday afternoon matchup, currently scheduled for a 1 p.m. start. Following the home matchup, the Catamounts will hit the road for a March 29 match in Birmingham, Ala. with the Samford Bulldogs.
