GAME NOTES

Western Carolina returns to action after a pair of home rainouts last week against both Tennessee Tech and Gardner-Webb, delaying the Catamounts 2024 home opener. The last time WCU was on the diamond, the Catamounts struggled with four tight defeats at the hands of Bradley, North Alabama, and #10 Alabama in tournament action at UAB's Green and Gold Classic. Junior Tessa Juett led the Catamounts at the plate, totaling six hits on the weekend which included three doubles and a triple. Senior Savannah Baldwin and sophomore Kennedy Stewman both tallied a pair of doubles throughout last weekend's tournament.

Tuesday's doubleheader at Radford starts the first of nine scheduled matchups against the Big South Conference. Following Tuesday's twinbill, WCU hosts Gardner-Webb on March 9 as part of the Catamount Classic in the front end of a nonconference home-and-home. Western Carolina also hosts Presbyterian in a doubleheader on March 12. The Big South matchups continue for the Catamounts on April 9 with preseason co-favorite USC Upstate for a pair of contests and concludes with a road doubleheader against the Runnin' Bulldogs on April 16.

Coming off of a win over Big 10 foe Purdue, Radford enters Tuesday's tilt with an 8-9 record as the Highlanders tallied the victory over the Boilermakers as part of the Thundering Herd Invitational last weekend. Radford has had a tough slate to begin 2024 with battles against power five foes in Virginia Tech, Georgia, Virginia, and Purdue thus far.

One of two preseason All-Big South selections, Lexie Roberts leads the Highlanders at the plate, recording a .436 average with 16 runs scored and a team-high 11 stolen bases. Abby Wilson, who also joined Roberts on the preseason all-conference team, checks in with a .348 average, totaling five doubles, two homers, and a team-high 15 RBIs.

Malorie Reeves leads the Highlanders in the circle with a 3-1 record in eight appearances, totaling four starts. Abby Peace and Morgan Cooper have seen action in 10 games for Radford's pitching staff, with Peace tallying a team-high three saves.

Radford was tabbed seventh in the Big South Preseason Poll, led by Alisa Tasler, who's in her third season at the helm.

WCU has faced Radford in 19 previous meetings between the two schools with the Highlanders holding a 12-7 edge in the head-to-head matchups. The Catamounts split a twinbill last March in Cullowhee, with WCU earning a 10-4 win before Radford grabbed a tight 7-6 victory in the backend of a doubleheader. Jeralynn Wells led the way in the contests with four hits, which included a double, as Makenzie Martin led WCU in the circle, tallying the victory in relief with three innings pitched, allowing one earned run.

Following Tuesday's action in Radford, the Catamounts return to their home diamond for the first time in 2024 with the Catamount Classic beginning on Friday, March 8. The 10-game classic will feature matchups between WCU, Kent State, NCCU, and Gardner-Webb. All 10 contests will feature live stats available at CatamountSports.com, with the five Catamount matchups featuring ESPN+ (paid subscription required) broadcasts.
