Big Third Inning Carries Wofford to Series Victory

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Wofford used a six-run third inning to carry the host Terriers past Western Carolina softball 7-2 on Sunday afternoon at Hope Field.

WCU posted four hits as four players got in the hit column. Freshman Lily Bell picked up her team-high 47th hit and her 22nd stolen base of the year. Her classmate Maya McPherson, senior Jeralynn Wells, and junior Tessa Juett joined Bell in the hit column with Wells adding an RBI to her performance.

The Catamounts were down 1-2-3 in the opening frame, but the Terriers posted a pair of two-out singles, and starter Makenzie Martin picked up a groundout to keep the game scoreless after an inning.

Western Carolina (13-23, 4-8 SoCon) was erased quickly in the second inning with another 1-2-3 frame before the hosts struck for the game's opening marker. Wofford used a two-out RBI double in the second to claim the early 1-0 lead after two frames.

Juett drew a leadoff walk before a two-out single from Bell put runners on the corners, but the Terriers induced a foul out down the right field line to keep the lead at one.

Wofford (16-18, 6-6 SoCon) had an offensive explosion into the third inning, recording a six-run frame with a bases-loaded walk and an RBI single. It took advantage of a WCU error to plate a run before the inning was capped with a two-run single to push the lead to 7-0 after three.

Juett tallied a one-out single in the fifth, but the Catamounts were held off the scoreboard. Wofford opened the home half of the inning with a leadoff single, but three straight outs including a strikeout from Norton kept the score at 7-0.

After the hosts recorded the first two outs in the sixth inning, WCU had Savannah Baldwin reach via a two-out error before a single from McPherson put two runners on. Dirks also took advantage of a Terrier miscue to plate a run before an RBI single from Wells cut the deficit to 7-2 after 5.5 innings.

Wofford opened the home half of the sixth with a leadoff triple and drew a four-pitch walk before Norton could get three straight outs, including a strikeout to end the threat.

Wofford made quick work of WCU in the seventh with three straight groundouts to secure the 7-2 series finale win.

Martin (0-10) got the start for the Catamounts and went 2.1 innings, allowing six runs and four earned runs on seven hits. Taylor Norton tossed the final 3.2 innings, allowing one unearned run while scattering three hits and totaling two strikeouts.

Abby Greenwood (6-11) went the distance for Wofford, allowing two unearned runs on four hits while recording seven strikeouts to earn the hosts' complete-game victory.

The Catamounts continue a road-heavy portion of their schedule with a trip to Boiling Springs for a doubleheader with Gardner-Webb scheduled for 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16, from Brinkley Softball Stadium. Both contests will be shown on ESPN+ (paid subscription required) and have live stats available at CatamountSports.com.
