WCU Athletics Enjoys Record-Breaking Attendance, Revenue in 2023-24

Catamount football, women’s soccer, and volleyball each pace the SoCon

Cullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina University Athletics enjoyed another historic season in 2023-24 in both attendance and ticket sales as fans turned out in record numbers for several sports this past season.

Catamount football averaged a Southern Conference-leading 11,935 fans during the 2023 season, a benchmark that ranked 15th in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) that includes 133 teams. All five home games saw crowds of over 10,000 funnel into E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field with Family Weekend topping the charts with 13,357 in attendance. WCU also set records in season ticket sales, number of season tickets sold, and overall ticket revenue generated.

The 2023 SoCon regular-season and tournament champion Catamount women's soccer team finished first in the SoCon in average attendance with 581 at the Catamount Athletics Complex. A home attendance record was set on November 5, as 1,389 fans celebrated the WCU's tournament championship and berth into the NCAA Championship.

Coming off a quarterfinal appearance in the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC) the season before, Catamount volleyball enjoyed an average attendance of 471 that also paced the SoCon.

Ramsey Center crowds continued through the winter as on Jan. 16, a crowd of 5,018 – the third largest in school facility history – saw the men's basketball showdown between WCU and Samford on the CBS Sports Network. All told, men's basketball set an all-time high in ticket sales revenue for the 2023-24 season.

Continuing the trend in the spring, Catamount baseball eclipsed the previous benchmark for seasonal ticket revenue during the 2024 home schedule. Across campus, the Catamount softball team drew a facility record crowd for its home matchup against the nationally-ranked Tennessee Volunteers as 732 fans filled the Catamount Softball Complex.

Overall ticket revenue which represents the sports of football, men's and women's basketball, and baseball were also at an all-time high this athletic season.

"I want to send a heartfelt thank you to Catamount Nation for their amazing support of our athletic teams this season," said WCU Director of Athletics Alex Gary.
