Women's Basketball Hits the Road to Take on Wake Forest and West Georgia

Cullowhee, N.C. -- The Western Carolina women's basketball team is opening up a rapid-fire holiday week with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons and the West Georgia Wolves. WCU opens play on Sunday, Nov. 22, in Winston-Salem with a 1:00 p.m. tip. The Catamounts follow that game with a trip to Carrollton, Ga. On Nov. 24, take on West Georgia at 2:00 p.m.

The Catamounts (2-2) enter the two-game run after falling to the UNC Asheville Bulldogs their last time out. Wake Forest (5-0) is playing their sixth consecutive home game to open the season and most recently defended their home court against NC Central with a close 68-65 win. West Georgia (2-2) has an unblemished 2-0 record at home to open the season, but most recently fell to Georgia Tech in a hard-fought 68-60 contest.

Sunday's game with Wake Forest will be live streamed on ACCNX (paid subscription required), with Tuesday's game against West Georgia appearing on ESPN+ (paid subscription required). Fans can follow along with both games through the live stats as well.

Full Court Press:
The Catamounts and Demon Deacons meet for the 23rd time in program history, with the Catamounts controlling the overall series 12-10. Sunday's bout will be the first between the two teams since the 2014-15 season, with the Catamounts looking for their first win against the ACC foe since a 74-71 victory in the 2006-07 season.

WCU is looking to pump the brakes on a three-game skid as the Catamounts most recently dropped a midweek contest against the UNC Asheville Bulldogs. The Catamounts will look to cut back on turnovers in the upcoming stretch of games, as they've committed 75 in the three-game streak.

The Demon Deacons are red hot on their home court, outscoring opponents 360 to 279 in Winston-Salem. They are shooting 44.7% per game to start the season and holding opponents to only 32.7% from the floor. However, Wake Forest's last two wins came by single digits, as they secured a 66-61 win over Mercer and fended off a furious rally by NC Central in a 68-65 victory. In those two tightly contested matchups, both teams shot over 35% from the floor and made at least five three-pointers, though the Demon Deacons held on for the win each time.

West Georgia and Western Carolina have only met once before, with WCU earning a thrilling 81-76 overtime win in Cullowhee a year ago. The Wolves are undefeated at home early in the season, with wins over Gardner-Webb (91-68) and Alabama State (64-61), holding those two teams . The Wolves fought back their last time out with a 38-point second-half surge against Georgia Tech, but fell to the Yellow Jackets 68-60 in Atlanta.

Players to Watch:
Ally Hollifield and Ary Dizon lead the Catamounts in points per game, with 15.0 and 10.0 averages, respectively. Hollifield has posted 75 points through WCU's five games of the season, while Dizon has posted 40 in her four outings. The duo were WCU's leading scorers against UNC Asheville, combining for 23 points and recording nine rebounds.

On the glass, the Catamounts are still led by Joyce Mulumba, who averages 8.0 boards per game. She leads the Southern Conference in offensive rebounds per game (4.4), with Ary Dizon ranking second and averaging 3.3.

Wake Forest has three players averaging double-digit points per game in Grace Oliver, Mary Carter, and Raven Preston. Oliver leads the trio with 13.6 PPG, though Carter is close behind with 12.0. Despite seeing action in less than 100 minutes over Wake's first five games, Preston averages 10 points per outing and most recently went for 13 against NC Central.

West Georgia is led by Asia Donald and Jasmine Jones, who average 17.8 and 17.3 points per game, respectively. Jasmine Jones has done most of her damage from beyond the arc for West Georgia as she's connected on 17 three-pointers through UWG's four games. Destiny Jones, another name to watch for the Wolves, is a sophomore who is nearly averaging a double-double per game with 12.8 points and 9.7 rebounds per outing.

Up Next for The Catamounts:
Following WCU's sprint to open the holiday week, the Catamounts will travel to Nassau for the 2025 Baha Mar Nassau Hoops Championship. They're slated to face the Clemson Tigers on Nov. 28 at 4:00 p.m. and will take on either the Michigan State Spartans or the Temple Owls on Nov. 30.

The Catamounts will return home to host the USC Upstate Spartans for an Education Day game on Wed., Dec. 3. Tip against the Spartans is set for 11:00 a.m.
