Catamounts Go 3-0 in Third Sets, Take 6-1 Win Over Presbyterian

Cullowhee, N.C. -- It was an eventful Sunday afternoon at the Catamount Athletic Complex as three singles matches went to third sets but the WCU women's tennis team rallied for a 6-1 win over the Presbyterian Blue Hose. Freshman Zoe Lui secured the win for the Catamounts on the sixth court, recording her first Division I victory over Presbyterian's Mary Ellen Longmire.

The Catamount doubles squads rolled early as WCU swept the initial point. The pairings of Andrea Redondo & Chloe Schwarz and Isabella Sambola & Angela Perez notched 6-0 victories to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Jade Groen & Madison Schwarz recorded the 6-2 victory on the top court as the Catamounts earned their fourth doubles sweep of the season.

Jade Groen and Andrea Redondo took their singles matches without much drama, claiming 6-2, 6-2 and 6-3, 6-4 victories in straight sets. Presbyterian's Madison Dennett took a straight-set win on court four over Angela Perez as the Catamounts held a tentative 3-1 advantage with matches on courts 2, 3, and 6 to go.

All three remaining sets went the distance, with two involving tight tiebreaker battles before the Catamounts secured the win on all three courts. Zoe Lui fought for her first Division I singles win, taking the first set on court six in a thrilling 7-6 (9-7) tiebreaker. Presbyterian's Longmire battled back in the second set with a 6-3 win, before Lui took the day for the Catamounts with a 6-3 set three.

Trailing in a singles match for only the second time this season, Chloe Schwarz rallied on the third court for the fifth point of the day for WCU. Falling 6-4 in set one to Valentina De Sousa, Schwarz rattled off back-to-back 6-4 set wins to remain undefeated in singles play on the season.

The final point of the day was decided on court two as Isabella Sambola battled with McKenzie Davis. The junior Catamount cruised to a 6-2 set one victory but fell 7-6 (7-5) in set two. Sambola claimed the first point of set three, but Davis responded with two straight before the duo began trading points. After tying it up at four, Sambola was the first to five points before Davis matched her total again to force an eventual seventh point. Sambola took a 6-5 advantage before stringing four consecutive points in the final game, taking a well-deserved and hard-fought win.
