Cullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina football reached the midpoint of its annual spring drills on Saturday morning as the squad held its first scrimmage session, working out for around two hours on the turf at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field.
Opening under cool morning temperatures and working out under crystal clear skies, Saturday's light scrimmage included just over 75 total plays with both sides showing progress and highlights as reps were spread across much of the roster.
WCU's defense came up with three takeaways including interceptions by sophomore DB
Hasaan Sykes and returning senior DB
Armond Anderson, while LB
Blue Monroe recovered a fumble as the ball was put on the carpet. Redshirt junior safety
Ja'morri Downing also forced a fumble among the highlights.
On offense, quarterback
Taron Dickens tossed a touchdown pass to WR
Malik Knight, with redshirt freshman QB
Isaac Lee connecting with WR
De'Andre Tamarez for a scoring strike as four QBs split the reps. Joining Dickens and Lee were returner
Bennett Judy and early enrollee, true freshman
Jordan Martin-Durham. WCU's offense split rushing reps between several running backs, while both units rotated through different pairings along the line of scrimmage.
Western Carolina returns to the practice field on the afternoon of Tuesday, March 25, for the first of three weekly practices – Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday – ahead of its next scrimmage on Saturday, March 29. Unless otherwise noted, each WCU spring football practice is open to the public. It is respectfully requested that spectators observe from the stadium seating area and avoid being either on the field or the sidelines.
Please be aware of the addition of construction fencing around the West side of the stadium and Stadium parking lot that will limit access points as construction plans for the Western Skybox and Whitmire West projects start to ramp up this spring.
