Brayden Corn Named SoCon Baseball Player of the Week

Junior transfer led WCU with a .533 average in four games last week

3/24/2025 2:30:00 PM

Cullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina junior transfer outfielder Brayden Corn was today named the Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Week, presented by Holston Gases for his efforts in guiding the Catamounts to a pair of home victories in games played March 17 through March 24.

Corn is the second Catamount to earn the top weekly player honors from the league with Mason Holton collecting the first award on March 3. Corn is the third WCU player to be honored this spring, joining Holton and right-handed pitcher Brandon Langley who garnered Pitcher of the Week plaudits on March 10.

The conference office selects and announces the weekly awards based on nominations submitted by the communications or media relations contacts from each member institution.

Corn led the Catamounts on the week with a .533 batting average (8-of-15) with two home runs and five RBI, finishing with a .933 slugging percentage. Among the team's four games, the Hendersonville, N.C., product posted three multi-hit games including just his second three-hit effort as a Catamount. Corn added a pair of walks and an HBP to bolster his .611 on-base percentage for the week. In the field, the speedy centerfielder tallied nine putouts defensively in error-free play.

Corn opened the week with a 2-for-4 effort in the midweek victory over Presbyterian, driving in one of WCU's four runs in the 4-2 victory over the Blue Hose. In the SoCon series opener against VMI, he reached base twice with a walk and drove in two on a home run for his lone hit in a 1-for-3 effort. His two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning provided the final tally, 7-3, and also seized momentum back from the Kedyets as Grayson Fitzwater had made it a two-run game with a two-run homer in the top of the sixth.

On Saturday, Corn collected his second multi-hit game of the week, finishing 2-for-4 with a solo home run again in the sixth inning that cut WCU's deficit to just two runs in the eventual 5-4 loss.

The USC Union transfer then matched his best single-game performance in a Catamount uniform with three singles in a 3-for-4 effort on Sunday, reaching base successfully four times with a second walk on the week. He plated a game-tying run with an RBI single in the first inning and was kept off the base paths just once by the Keydets in the finale. Corn matched his first three-hit effort in a home game against Rider on March 2 where he finished 3-for-5 with a two-run homer and a two RBI single.

Corn ranks fifth in the SoCon in seasonal batting average at .365, including the third-most base hits (35) as WCU boasts three of the top four in the league in total hits. He has 22 runs scored with 22 RBI with a team-leading four sacrifice hits in his first season in a Catamount uniform. He additionally leads the squad with nine stolen bases.

Western Carolina (11-13) concludes its eight-game homestand on Tuesday, hosting mountain-rival UNC Asheville (9-15) at 5 p.m. at Childress Field / Hennon Stadium. The Bulldogs have dropped four straight on the season after being swept by Longwood in Big South Conference play over the weekend. After dropping eight of the nine previous meetings, WCU has won the last four meetings with the 'Dogs.
