KNOXVILLE, TN. – The Western Carolina softball team kicked off the month of April Tuesday night in Knoxville as the Catamounts were on the wrong end of a 4-0 shutout at the hands of #7/6 Tennessee at Sherri Parker Lee Stadium.
Sophomore Sydney Dirks roped a two-out single in the top of the seventh inning to break up the Lady Vols bid at a no-hitter. Classmate Maya McPherson reached on a hit by a pitch and a fielding error by Tennessee earlier in the contest.
The Lady Vols jumped in front in the opening inning with a pair of runs to take the early 2-0 lead after the first, with Juett tallying a strikeout to end the first inning. Tennessee increased its lead in the second with an infield single that allowed a run to score on a WCU miscue in the field.
The rest of the contest saw limited traffic for both teams on the bases as the Lady Vols added a solo homer in the sixth before Western Carolina mounted a rally in the seventh.
With two outs in the final frame, McPherson drew a two-out hit by pitch before Dirks lined a single through the left side before Tennessee secured the final out to finish off the 4-0 shutout win in nonconference play.
Senior Tessa Juett (7-8) tossed 6.0 innings in the starting role for the Catamounts, allowing just four runs – three earned – on four hits with five punchouts. Juett matched freshman Amanda Fulton for the most complete games on the squad with her eight of the season.
Erin Nuwer (5-1) went the distance for Tennessee with 12 strikeouts to earn the victory, only surrendering the two-out single in the winning effort.
The Catamounts continue their road swing in the Volunteer State on Saturday, April 5, with a trip to Chattanooga to continue SoCon play against the Mocs. The series is slated for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday before a 2 p.m. single game on Sunday to conclude the weekend in the Scenic City.
