Catamounts Ranked No. 18 in Preseason Stats Perform FCS Top 25

WCU is one of the two SoCon teams inside the rankings, with three schools listed

Cullowhee, N.C. – Runner-up in the 2024 race for the Southern Conference crown and picked third by the league's head coaches in this year's preseason conference poll, Western Carolina football was ranked No. 18 in the Stats Perform FCS Preseason Top 25 Poll released today. This season's rank is two spots higher than the 20th spot WCU found itself in at the outset of last fall.

It's just the third time since 1994 that Western Carolina has carried a preseason national ranking into its season opener, joining the 2024 team (20th) and the 1994 Catamounts, who were ranked 17th when they hosted Lenoir-Rhyne to open the season at home. Earlier this preseason, WCU was also slotted at No. 18 by the HERO Sports Top 25 back in late May, one of four SoCon teams to receive votes, including Mercer (12th-t), with both Chattanooga and ETSU ranking just outside the top 25. The AFCA Coaches Preseason FCS Poll has not yet been released.

WCU was one of just two teams from the Southern Conference listed among the preseason FCS Top 25. Preseason favorite and defending regular-season champion Mercer just missed the Top 10 with an 11th-place nod, while Chattanooga was among those receiving votes.

Nine of the 13 NCAA FCS leagues were represented in the Top 25, led by the Big Sky with six ranked teams. Defending national champion North Dakota State, which received 54 of a possible 56 first-place votes, was picked as the preseason No. 1. It marked the eighth time NDSU gained preseason No. 1. Over the last 14 seasons, the Bison have captured 10 FCS championships, including a 35-32 win over Montana State in early January to cap the title run.

National runner-up Montana State, the 2024 Big Sky Conference champion, was No. 2 in the preseason poll. SDSU and South Dakota were No. 3 and 4, respectively, while defending Southland Conference champion UIW followed at No. 5.

The Stats Perform FCS Top 25 Poll will be released each Monday during the regular season and one day after the FCS championship game, scheduled for Jan. 5 in Nashville, Tenn. A first-place vote is worth 25 points, a second-place vote 24 points, all the way down to one point for a 25th-place vote.

Western Carolina returned to workouts in uppers – helmets and shoulder pads – on Monday morning, finishing amidst drizzle before heavier morning showers moved into the area. The Catamounts are going full-contact in full pads for the first time this camp on Tuesday, Aug. 5, beginning at 8:30 a.m. (practice times are subject to change).

A reminder that WCU's preseason football practices are open to the public. It is respectfully requested, though, that spectators observe from the stadium seating area and avoid being either on the field or on the sidelines for safety. Also, please be aware of the construction fencing around the West side of the stadium, which will limit access points as construction on the Western Skybox and Whitmire West projects continues this summer and into the fall season.
