Catamounts Cap Non-Conference Schedule with 2-0 Win at UNC Wilmington

Wilmington, N.C. – Western Carolina women's soccer overcame a sluggish start to its nonconference finale to earn its second consecutive 2-0 shutout victory, scoring a pair of second-half goals to overcome in-state foe, UNC Wilmington.

Despite being outshot in the match 11-to-9, senior Leanne Trudel anchored down with three saves, including a critical block in the 53rd minute to preserve the shutout before Sofia Goclowski netted her third game-winning goal of the season in the 61st.

The Catamounts end their nonconference schedule with a 4-3-2 mark, including an unblemished 3-0-2 record in road contests. The Seahawks fall to 4-3-1 and are 1-3 at home this season.

Friday's nonconference finale for both teams opened quickly, with Milla Syska capping off an early Catamount surge with a shot on net only 24 seconds into the match. Wilmington's Morgan Hobbs deflected the Syska offering for her first and only save of the night. Following the early shot, neither team posted a shot on goal for the remaining 44 minutes of the first half, with the two teams combining for only six total shots, excluding Syska's early rocket.

UNC Wilmington got off to an early start in the second half, taking its first shot on goal in the 46th minute and a second in the 53rd. Trudel, though, denied both attempts, leaving the match goalless.

Junior Sofia Goclowski was the first to break the scoreless battle, as quick passes from Erika Gariepy and Milla Syska gave the Sharon, Mass. product space to work with on the left wing. Goclowski buried a shot from well outside the box in the far right of the net, giving the Catamounts the first tally of the night.

The Seahawks rallied following the goal, though, putting another shot on frame in the 69th minute from Viktoria Hankova, but Trudel again denied the would-be goal for her what proved to be her final save of the night.

Isabella DeMarco and Ava Robitaille combined for the insurance marker only a minute and a half later, with DeMarco perfectly placing a corner kick high on the far post. Robitaille took to the skies, outjumping two UNCW defenders for her third goal of the season.

UNCW mounted a late rally, firing three shots in quick succession between the 84th and 85th minutes. None were officially on frame, but two shots found the woodwork, including a high shot by Allie Planeaux, which would have found the net had it been on target.

All told, the Seahawks held a slight lead in shots in the match, outshooting WCU 11-9, but both teams put three shots on frame. The Catamounts had seven corner kicks, scoring off one, while the Seahawks took three. Friday's match was a physical bout, with 31 combined fouls and two yellow cards distributed.
