Spartanburg, S.C. – Junior Elsa Maren Steinarsdóttir and freshman
Marissa Scaletta each carded rounds of 3-over-par 75 on Monday to lead Western Carolina in the opening round of the Terrier Intercollegiate, helping the Catamounts sit eighth in the team standings and just two strokes outside the top five entering Tuesday's final round.
Steinarsdóttir overcame a difficult start to climb back into contention. The Akranes, Iceland, native recorded two double-bogeys and two bogeys over her first 10 holes to fall to 6-over par before igniting her round with three consecutive birdies. She added two more birdies on the back side, offsetting two late bogeys to finish the day at 3-over-par 75 with five total birdies.
Scaletta's round followed a steadier path. The freshman opened with five pars over her first six holes and closed the day with six straight pars. A birdie on the par-5 15th helped offset a double-bogey and two bogeys as she matched Steinarsdóttir atop the Catamount scorecard.
