Orlando, Fla. – Western Carolina women's tennis dropped the second match of its spring break trip to the Sunshine State, falling to the Penn Quakers on Friday, 6-1.
Mia Miranda secured a win by injury on the second singles court early in her first set, but the Catamounts were forced to forfeit on the sixth singles court, and withdrawals on both the top and fifth courts resulted in the loss.
WCU (2-10, SoCon 0-1) returns home to host Marshall on March 18 and Furman on March 19. Penn (7-7, Ivy 0-0) has the week away from competition before returning to the courts vs Temple on March 21.
How it Happened:
The Catamounts conceded on court three in doubles play, with the Quakers taking a 6-2 win on the top court to secure the point. Hokualohi Lui and Kelly Coetzee held a 4-3 lead on the second doubles court when Penn clinched the doubles point and did not finish.
WCU also conceded on court six in singles play, with Penn taking the early 2-0 lead in the match. Mia Miranda claimed a singles win as the second seed, with Maya Urata retiring due to injury. Miranda was up 2-1 when her match ended in the first set.
Penn ultimately clinched the win with a pair of retirements by the Catamounts, with both Lui and Mariya Dobreva unable to finish their matches on courts five and one, respectively.
Kelly Coetzee fell 6-1, 6-2 as the fourth seed to Liza Tkachenko, with Axelle Van Beurden also falling in her match on the third court. Beurden fell 6-2 in the first set before rallying for a 7-6 (7-3) tiebreaker victory in her second. She fell in a 10-point tiebreak in the third set 1-0 (10-8).
