Cullowhee, N.C. – Four Catamount football players earned the prestigious distinction of being selected to the National Football Foundation (NFF) Hampshire Honor Society for 2026. Offensive lineman
Brett Gray, placekicker
Christian Lowery, defensive end
Micah Nelson, and two-sport student-athlete, transfer wide receiver
Painter Richards-Baker, earned selection as the organization announced its honorees.
Nelson, a two-time finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy and a national finalist for the 2025 Doris Robinson Award, is a two-time Hampshire Honor Society selection. He joins a select list that includes former Catamounts DL Marlon Alexander, TE Clayton Bardall, long-snapper Colby Cross, PK Richard McCollum, and OL Blake Whitmore to have earned multiple selections.
Nelson and Richards-Baker were also named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team in 2025. Nelson earned his third all-district honor, joining former WCU Academic All-America offensive lineman Jason Whaley as the only three-time selection. Richards-Baker collected his second Academic All-District honor, also earning recognition at Dartmouth before transferring to WCU.
Nominated by their respective schools, members of the NFF Hampshire Honor Society must be either:
- A senior player, who will graduate this spring/summer, and just completed his final year of playing eligibility in 2025; or
- A graduated player or grad transfer, who has already earned a bachelor's degree and competed in the 2025 season (even if the player has remaining eligibility and may return to play next season).
And must have:
- Attained a minimum undergraduate cumulative GPA of 3.2 (4.0 scale); and
- Been a starter or contributor throughout the 2025 season.
A total of 2,633 student-athletes from 369 schools qualified for membership in 2026, setting a record for the total number of members during the program's 20-year history, recognizing academic excellence and achievement across college football. That list included 507 representatives from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). This year's honorees have an average collective grade point average of 3.57
Five Southern Conference teams were represented on the 2026 NFF Hampshire Honor Society, with ETSU leading the way with nine, followed by Chattanooga (6), WCU (4), Wofford (3), and The Citadel (1).
Celebrating its 20th year in 2026,
the NFF Hampshire Society has recognized 23,605 football student-athletes from 692 schools since 2007. Among those are 5,028 honorees from the NCAA FCS. During that stretch, Western Carolina has had 37 football players represented on the NFF Hampshire Honor Society, the third most among the current membership of The Southern Conference, trailing only Wofford (53) and Chattanooga (46).
"Twenty years ago, college coaches around the country came to the National Football Foundation asking us to recognize not just their top student-athlete, but the numerous student-athletes on their teams who were also excelling at the highest levels in the classroom," said NFF President & CEO
Steve Hatchell. "Their voices led to the creation of the NFF Hampshire Honor Society, and two decades later, the results speak for themselves. Year after year, we continue to see remarkable academic achievements across college football."
The NFF Hampshire Honor Society is one of the most comprehensive scholar-athlete initiatives in college athletics, recognizing football players from all divisions who have maintained a cumulative 3.2 GPA or higher throughout their college careers.
"To see this program reach 20 years with a record number of honorees is really special," said NFF Chairman
Archie Manning. "As the world of college football faces an era of transition, one thing remains the same: the game's ability to develop well-rounded student-athletes committed to excellence in the classroom as well as on the field. The NFF Hampshire Honor Society provides an important platform for us to recognize the value of the game in developing leaders while shining a light on their individual accomplishments."
