Greensboro, N.C. – Western Carolina women's tennis wrapped up its regular season on Tuesday, falling on the road against the UNC Greensboro Spartans, 6-1. Mariya Dobreva recorded a singles win for the Catamounts and also powered to a top court doubles victory with Mia Miranda in the road defeat.
WCU (2-17, 0-7 SoCon) now looks to get rested before returning to the courts in the 2026 Southern Conference Women's Tennis Championship, scheduled for April 16-18 in Chattanooga, Tenn.
UNCG (3-15, 1-4 SoCon) returns to action on Wednesday afternoon, hosting regional foe Elon. The Spartans still have two SoCon matches on their schedule, facing the Samford Bulldogs on April 10 and the Mercer Bears on April 12 ahead of the conference tournament.
How it Happened:
The Catamounts fielded a full doubles lineup in Tuesday's match, winning on the top court but dropping the point with defeats on courts No. 2 and 3. Mariya Dobreva and Mia Miranda recorded a 6-3 victory over the UNCG pairing of Sydney Bly and Lauren Thomson. The Catamount duo has won its last two SoCon matches and has seven doubles wins on the season.
The Spartans took the doubles point with 6-1 and 6-2 victories on the second and third courts to take a 1-0 lead in the match. WCU fielded the pairings of Hokualohi Lui and Kelly Coetzee at two, with Axelle Van Buerden and Jennelle Roberts on the third court.
UNCG's advantage grew to 3-0 in singles play, as the Catamounts forfeited on courts five and six. The Spartans eventually secured the match on the fourth court, winning 6-1, 6-1.
Dobreva prevented the shutout, earning a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6 win on the top court over Sophia Cedeno. The victory is Dobreva's 10th of the season, giving the Catamounts a double-digit singles victor in four consecutive seasons.
Axelle Van Beurden battled on the second court, falling 6-4, 7-5 to Sara Kostic. Mia Miranda closed out the day on the third court, falling 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) to Lauren Thomson.
