Cullowhee, N.C. – With six events completed on both sides, the Western Carolina track and field teams are in a prime position following the first day of competition at the 2026 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted at the on-campus Catamount Athletic Complex.
Western Carolina took two-thirds of the podium in both the men's and women's hammer throw, highlighting Monday's action. Austin Cline and Emmie Finley swept the hammer throw crowns for the Catamounts, becoming the first WCU duo to do so since 2012, when Jamie Van Pelt and Zakiyyah Stewart accomplished the feat.
Despite trailing the defending conference champion, Samford, by 22 points in the women's competition, the Catamounts are currently projected to emerge as team champions based on the remaining events on the schedule. Neither team gained nor lost much ground on the other through six scored events, with WCU projected to score 195 points to Samford's 194.5. The WCU women's team sent 10 qualifiers to the finals of their respective events, with points up for grabs on Tuesday's final day.
On the men's side, the Catamounts, Bulldogs, and Furman are gridlocked in a tight spread through the opening day of competition. Samford leads with 51 points, followed by the Paladins (50) and Catamounts (49), though WCU is projected to edge Furman by 72 points for the runner-up spot.
The SoCon Championships resume Tuesday with the decathlon beginning at 9:15 a.m. Live results, daily recaps, and photos are available at SoConSports.com. Day two coverage begins on ESPN+ (paid subscription required) at 1:30 p.m. ET.
