Baseball Puts Four on CSC Academic All-District Team

Catamounts land multiple selections for the fourth-straight season

Cullowhee, N.C. – Four Catamount baseball players were selected to the 2026 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District team, marking a fourth-straight season that Western Carolina has landed multiple selections on the honorary squad. Outfielders Walker Fox and Jaylen Jones, designated hitter Wyatt Stanley, and fifth-year infielder Trent Turner each earned academic all-district plaudits.

Turner is just the second Catamount baseball player to earn Academic All-District plaudits, which amended its criteria for selection back in 2023 to include each student-athlete nominated to the all-district team. Turner joins Zach Ketterman (2022-24) as a three-time honoree for the Catamounts.

A combined 14 baseball student-athletes from around the Southern Conference were honored this week, including five from Wofford, three from The Citadel, and two from UNCG, joining WCU's four selections.

Turner closed the season with a .291 batting average, finishing second on the team with 62 base hits, including 12 doubles, a team-best three triples, and a team-leading 12 home runs. His 44 RBI ranked him fourth on the squad. In SoCon play, the Waynesville, N.C., product led the WCU regulars with a .386 average, including 32 hits with seven doubles, all three triples, and five homers. Turner finished the year with 16 multi-hit games, and recorded WCU's longest hitting streak of the season at 11 straight games. He additionally reached safely in 22-straight games, the second-longest streak for the squad.

A first-team All-Southern Conference selection and a SoCon All-Defensive team honoree, Turner – a two-time Brooks Wallace Award watch list selection for the nation's top shortstop – made the move to second base this season. He was part of the SoCon's top double-play unit, part of 24 of WCU's league-best 48 double-plays.

Turner finished his WCU career with a .306 batting average, totaling 209 base hits, including 40 doubles, five triples, and 34 home runs, tied for 13th in WCU's career record books in the latter. He scored 148 career runs and drove home 146 over three seasons after transferring from USC Union, closing his time on the tail-end of WCU's career RBI chart tied for 24th. He was plunked a combined 29 times over three seasons, tied for 19th in WCU's ledgers.

Turner finished with a 3.828 cumulative grade point average as an undergraduate and holds a 3.571 GPA while pursuing a Master of Business Administration, with an expected graduation this fall. He is a three-time CSC Academic All-District honoree and has landed on the SoCon Academic Honor Roll twice (2023-24; 2024-25), with this year's team yet to be announced.

Walker Fox capped his first season in a Catamount uniform with a .262 batting average, collecting 48 hits with 13 doubles and nine home runs. He scored 43 runs and drove home 49, ranking second on the squad in RBI that included a team-best 12 multiple-RBI efforts. Fox matched Mason Holton with a team-best seven RBI in a road win at The Citadel in late March.

The Canton, N.C., product started 55 of the 56 games he played, splitting time between left and right field. Fox drew 22 walks and was plunked a team-high tying 15 times as part of his .379 on-base percentage.

Fox boasts a cumulative GPA of 3.839 while majoring in integrated health sciences.

Making the move to the outfield, Jaylen Jones started 51 of the 52 games he played this spring. He finished second among the Catamount regulars with a .296 batting average, collecting 53 hits with 11 doubles, a triple, and five home runs. Jones was second on the team with 17 multi-hit games, including 15 two-hit efforts.

The Loganville, Ga., product scored 37 runs and drove home 35 in 2026, adding 20 walks and three HBPs to bolster his .374 on-base percentage. He also led the team with 17 stolen bases. Jones scored a team-best five runs in a win over regular-season champion Mercer on April 11.

Majoring in computer information systems, Jones holds a cumulative GPA of 3.644. He was selected to the 2024-25 SoCon Academic Honor Roll.

Wyatt Stanley finished the year with a .275 batting average, starting all 47 games in which he saw action, missing time with a hand injury at mid-season. He split time between the outfield and as the designated hitter. The High Point, N.C., product recorded 46 hits, including four doubles, a triple, and a career-best 11 home runs. He finished with 41 runs scored and drove home 33, adding five stolen bases. He hit .333 in SoCon play.

Stanley twice recoded a team-best six at-bats, and boasted WCU's longest reached base safely streak with a run of 23-straight games, closing the season with an eight-game stretch.

Stanley is majoring in health and physical education and has a cumulative GPA of 3.524. He was named to the Spring 2025 Academic All-SoCon team and was a 2023-24 SoCon Academic Honor Roll recipient.

To date, Western Carolina has placed 28 student-athletes on the CSC Academic All-District team across eight sports – six apiece from football and women's soccer, five from softball, four from baseball and volleyball, one each from men's and women's basketball, and one from women's tennis. Later this spring, the all-district teams for men's and women's golf (at-large), track and field, and cross country will also be announced.

The CSC (formerly College Sports Information Directors of America – or CoSIDA) Academic All-District Team aims to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the diamond and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America® program separately recognizes baseball honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA.

Selections to the 2026 Academic All-District® teams were made from nominations submitted by the communications or sports information professionals at each NCAA member institution. Baseball nominees were required to have posted a 3.50 or better GPA, completed at least two semesters at their current school, and must compete in 90 percent of the institution's games played or must start at least 66 percent of the institution's games. For pitchers, a student-athlete must have made at least 17 appearances or pitched at least 35 innings. Freshmen student-athletes were ineligible.
