'White Out' Conditions in Store for Saturday in Cullowhee

Western Carolina hosts Presbyterian at 2:30 p.m. on Family Weekend

Cullowhee, N.C. – Family Weekend and a stadium-wide White Out set the stage Saturday afternoon as Western Carolina hosts Presbyterian at E.J. Whitmire Stadium / Bob Waters Field, the loudest house in the Southern Conference. The Catamounts and Blue Hose are scheduled to kick off at 2:30 p.m. in WCU's regular-season nonconference finale, with fans encouraged to wear white as WCU looks to "White Out Whitmire" against the Blue Hose.

Western Carolina looks to remain unbeaten at home this season after rallying past Eastern Kentucky 45-21 in its home opener back on Aug. 29, while also trying to snap a two-game slide coming on the road. Presbyterian enters off its bye week, splitting its first two games with a home win over UVA Wise (47-37) in the debut of first-year head coach Matt Rahl and a road loss at Mercer 62-3, facing its second SoCon school of the year at WCU.

Limited tickets for Saturday's home date remain available, while all WCU pre-paid game-day parking has sold out in advance. Fans should check out "Things to Know Before You Go" for additional pertinent game day details.

What 2 Watch 4 – Saturday's QB Battle:
Both quarterbacks have been catalysts for their respective teams – transfer Lex Thomas for Western Carolina and first-year starter Landon Sharpe for Presbyterian.

Thomas enters the weekend fifth nationally with 811 combined passing yards through three games this season, twice eclipsing the 300-yard mark. He ranks eighth nationally in the NCAA FCS with 270.33 passing yards per game on average, just behind PC's Sharpe in seventh with 275.50 yards through the air in his two outings. All told, PC ranks fifth nationally in passing yards while WCU is 16th after playing its FBS game last weekend.

Sharpe leads the NCAA FCS in total offense, averaging 350 yards per game, amassing 700 yards in two games on 103 plays. Thomas has 887 total yards, 10th nationally at 295.7 yards per game on 138 combined plays.

Western Carolina vs. Presbyterian – All-Time Series:
  • The Catamounts and Blue Hose meet for the 21st time on the gridiron dating back to 1950, though Saturday marks just the seventh series meeting since the Catamounts made the move to the NCAA Division I ranks back in 1975 – and just the sixth meeting since Presbyterian moved to D-I in 2007;
  • WCU holds an 11-9 all-time series lead over the Blue Hose;
  • Western Carolina enters the weekend riding a two-game series win streak – and has won 10 of the last 11 head-to-head meetings since 1970 ... the lone loss came in Clinton, S.C., in 2014, a gut-wrenching 19-14 defeat that was sealed by PC's second pick-six that erased a late, one-point Catamount lead;
  • The Catamounts hold a 6-5 series lead in games played in Cullowhee, including five-straight wins over Presbyterian at home ... WCU's last home loss to PC came back in 1969;
  • LAST SERIES MEETING: Western Carolina matched a program record with 77 points while amassing a facility record 766 yards of total offense in the 77-21 victory over the Blue Hose.
 Western Carolina vs. the Pioneer Football League:
  • Western Carolina has faced just THREE of the current 11 teams in the NCAA FCS DI non-scholarship Pioneer Football League, posting a 15-9 record in those meetings ... the bulk of WCU's meetings came against Presbyterian before the Blue Hose joined the PFL;
  • WCU has played Presbyterian (11-9) a combined 20 times previously ... the Catamounts also have unblemished records against PFL members Davidson (3-0) and Morehead State (1-0).
  • The Pioneer Football League (PFL) is the only non-scholarship, football-only NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) conference – teams do not award athletic scholarships ... the PFL is a truly national conference with members on each coast and throughout the nation's heartland: Butler, Dayton, Drake, and Valparaiso were among the league's founding members in 1993, along with Davidson, Marist, Morehead State, Presbyterian College, San Diego, St. Thomas, and Stetson University.
Up Next for Western Carolina:
Following Saturday's nonconference meeting with Presbyterian, the Catamounts open Southern Conference play – and a league gauntlet run – with next Saturday's "Blue Ridge Border Battle" against mountain rival East Tennessee State. Kickoff next weekend from Greene Stadium in Johnson City, Tenn., is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. WCU looks to snap a two-game series slide and reclaim "the Rock" traveling trophy.
