Asheboro, N.C. – After opening Monday buried among the top 20, Western Carolina junior Elsa Maren Steinarsdóttir mounted a dramatic charge up the leaderboard during the second round of the Tot Hill Farm Invitational before darkness suspended play with just two holes remaining in her round.
Fueled by five birdies, including four consecutive on the inward nine, the Catamount junior climbed 16 spots into contention for a top-10 finish while helping position Western Carolina for a move inside the team top 10 entering Tuesday's final round at the par-72, 6,023-yard Tot Hill Farm Golf Club.
Four teams – Campbell, Old Dominion, Western Carolina and Wofford – will conclude the second round before entering the final round on Tuesday. Live scoring is available online through
the Scoreboard app, powered by Clippd.
Behind Steinarsdóttir's second-round rally, Western Carolina is positioned to climb into the tournament's top 10 team standings once the remaining holes are completed Tuesday morning.
Steinarsdóttir fought through her opening round, posting 13 pars with one birdie against a pair of bogeys and one double-bogey to shoot 3-over-par, 75. Moving into her second round off hole No. 10, the Akranes, Iceland, native stumbled with consecutive bogeys on holes 14 and 15 before catching fire. Steinarsdóttir answered with five birdies over her next seven holes, including four straight, surging up the leaderboard before fading daylight halted play with two holes remaining.
Freshman
Marissa Scaletta is the only Catamount who, like Steinarsdóttir, has yet to complete her second round. The Belton, S.C., native sits tied for 50th through 35 holes after opening the tournament with an eagle and a birdie in round one.
Though positions could shift as the remaining holes are completed, junior
Annalee Caveney sits tied for 53rd after matching rounds of 78 that included four birdies across 36 holes.
Freshmen
Julia Capellini and
Kelsey Haverluck are tied for 54th and 58th, respectively. Capellini recorded three birdies across her two rounds, while Haverluck posted one of the team's best rounds of the day with a 2-over 74 in round two, improving by 10 shots from her opening-round score.
Campbell turned in a first-round 9-under-par 279 and is in the clubhouse with a 12-stroke lead over second-place College of Charleston with just shy of 36 holes complete. UNC Wilmington is third, followed by Coastal Carolina and Old Dominion.
With three holes remaining to complete their second rounds, the Campbell duo of Fanni Gronlund and Jade Potter share the top spot on the individual leaderboard at 5-under-par, a stroke clear of third-place Pinky Chaisilprungruang of Charlotte.
