Cullowhee, N.C. - Former Western Carolina University quarterback David Rivers has signed as a free agent with the St. Louis Rams.
Rams' head coach Mike Martz said, "The things that we look for in a quarterback, I felt good about this kid having."
Rivers had one of the most prolific seasons in Catamount history in 2000, throwing for 2,878 yards. His passing yardage ranks second in the school's single-season list, as does his 208 completions. Rivers additionally threw 17 touchdowns, third-most in WCU history, with only nine interceptions in 350 attempts.
The 6-3, 220-pound Augusta, Ga., native was chosen to participate in the Senior Bowl and the Blue-Gray All-Star Classic. Rivers was named NCAA I-AA National Player of the Week (10/14/00) for his 474-yard, three-touchdown performance versus Wofford. He additionally was tabbed Southern Conference Player of the Week on two occasions. He threw for over 300 yards five times, including three games with over 400 yards.
