JD Mundy joined the Catamount baseball coaching staff prior to the start of the 2022 fall semester as the volunteer assistant coach. Mundy comes to Cullowhee after spending the past two years in the Baltimore Orioles farm system after a standout career split between Virginia Tech and Radford.
Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2020 after the abbreviated five-round MLB Draft, Mundy played in 139 minor league games between three teams in the Orioles system during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. He spent the 2021 season between the Class-A affiliates Delmarva (Md.) Shorebirds and Aberdeen (Md.) IronBirds where he hit .291 with 20 doubles and 15 home runs. In 2022, Mundy played in 67 games for the Double-A affiliate Bowie (Md.) Baysox where he slugged 15 doubles and eight homers with 68 RBI.

A native of Roanoke, Va., Mundy entered his final season in Radford as the Big South Conference’s Preseason Player of the Year after a first-team All-Big South selection in 2019. However, the 2020 season was shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic, ending with Mundy hitting .385 with six doubles, four home runs, and 19 RBI over the first 17 games of the campaign. In two seasons with the Highlanders, Mundy collectively batted .323 with 23 doubles, 17 home runs and 74 RBI across the 2019 and 2020 seasons. He boasted a .425 on-base percentage and a .606 slugging percentage.

Opening his collegiate career over two seasons (2017-2018) at Virginia Tech, Mundy batted around the .250 mark over 84 games with 59 starts. He collected 57 total hits including 11 doubles and 12 home runs while collecting 40 RBI, marks that led the Big South Conference.
