Cale Matthews joined the Catamount football coaching staff in May 2025, working as a quality control coach and an assistant wide receivers coach.
Matthews came to Cullowhee after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at Greensboro College, where he worked mainly with the wide receivers and special teams unit. He also served as the Pride’s Director of Football Operations and video coordinator. Matthews also has experience as an intern at North Carolina A&T in the spring of 2021.
A former National Strength & Conditioning Association (NCSA) All-America Award Winner in 2018 at South Johnston High, Matthews was named the male athlete of the year as a prep. He parlayed that to Greensboro College, where he was a four-year starter and second-team all-conference wide receiver in 2022. He finished with 114 career receptions for 1,414 yards with seven passing and receiving TDs, the first player to score a touchdown in program history.
Matthews graduated from Greensboro College with a Bachelor of Arts in Exercise & Sports Studies with a minor in Business Administration/Coaching in 2022. He was nominated for the National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) and served as a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
