Alex Macaulay - HEAd

Dr. Alex Macaulay

Associate professor of history at Western Carolina University, Dr. Alexander Macaulay Jr., was named the Faculty Athletics Representative for Catamount Athletics in the summer 2021.
 
Macaulay came to Western Carolina in August 2004 as a visiting assistant professor after spending the previous academic year in the same role at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Ga. He was elevated to assistant professor in May 2005 before being named an associate professor of history in June 2010. Macaulay served as the interim department head for WCU’s history department from July 2012-13. He has also twice served as the history department graduate program director from 2009-12 and again from 2016-21.
 
Over his career, Macaulay has been published in over half a dozen referred journals and published a book through his doctoral work, Marching in Step: Masculinity, Citizenship, and The Citadel in Post World War II America.
 
In addition to serving as WCU’s faculty athletics representative, Macaulay has also served on the Southern Conference’s Faculty and Staff Awards Committee from 2019-20 and was a member of WCU’s Athletics Committee from 2013-19, chairing the group in 2015-16.
 
A member of the Southern Historical Association and the South Carolina Historical Society, Macaulay received his bachelor of arts in history from The Citadel in 1994 and earned his master of art in history from the University of Tennessee in 1998. He earned his doctorate in history from the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga., in 2003.
