Western Carolina head volleyball coach Karen Glover announced the addition of Katie Butler as an assistant coach to her staff for the upcoming 2025 season. She completed her first season in Cullowhee with the Catamounts working primarily with the setters.

In her first season in Cullowhee, Butler worked with the 2025 SoCon Setter of the Year Katie Boney. Boney became the first player in school history to earn the league’s Setter of the Year honors, while also garnering five setter of the week awards. Boney became the first Catamount to hit 1000+ assists in a season since 2019, when Hannah Price totaled 1,023 helpers… she became the 17th player in school history to eclipse 1,000 career assists during the Purple & Gold’s five-set comeback win over Bradley. She also recorded a team-best nine double-doubles as she finished among the national leaders for assists and assists per set while topping the league in both categories.

A four-year volleyball letterwinner, Butler spent her past three seasons at Rhode Island following her debut collegiate season spent at North Texas.

Butler joins first-year assistant coach Paige Shaw, who came to Cullowhee in mid-April during the spring semester.

During her three seasons with the Rams, Butler played in 198 sets across 57 matches in the A-10 Conference after playing the 2021 season at North Texas, where she appeared in 45 sets over 17 matches within Conference USA with the Mean Green. The Rockleigh, N.J. native totaled 1,373 career assists in her pair of collegiate stops with URI and North Texas, including a team-best 490 helpers during her 2022 sophomore season with the Rams.

Butler finished with 50 aces, 42 blocks, 92 kills and 417 digs throughout her career with the Rams and Mean Green, including 41 kills and 7.54 assists per set in her debut season with Rhode Island.

As a prep, Butler was an honor roll student and three-year member of the volleyball team at Northern Valley Regional High in Old Tappan, N.J. She was ranked as the No. 2 overall volleyball player in New Jersey and the No. 1 setter in the state by Prepdigs.

Butler helped lead her team to back-to-back State Sectional titles (2017, 2018), as well as a State Championship in 2017 and a Bergen County Championship in 2019. She also played club volleyball with USANY and served as team captain.

In 2019, Butler was named the top U.S. setter at the Global Challenge in Pula, Croatia.

Butler is a 2025 graduate from Rhode Island, earning a degree in Communication Studies.
