Western Carolina Handles Georgia Southern 3-1

STATESBORO, Ga. - Western Carolina overcame a torrid start by Georgia Southern to defeat the Eagles 3-1 in Southern Conference volleyball action at Hanner Fieldhouse Sunday afternoon.

Georgia Southern (11-15, 5-11) started the match quickly as they jumped to a 6-1 lead in the first game. The Eagles eventually stretched their lead to 11-3 before Western Carolina (13-12, 10-5) stormed back, cutting its deficit to 14-12. The Eagles would recover in time to claim a 15-12 victory.

The Catamounts continued the offensive charge in game two, scoring five straight points to claim a 5-2 lead. Georgia Southern fought back, eventually trailing 10-9 before Western Carolina regained its form for a 15-11 victory.

The third frame proved to be easier for Western Carolina as they claimed a 15-5 victory. Georgia Southern opened the game with a 5-2 only to have the Catamounts score 13 points. The Eagles were held to a -.029 hitting percentage in the game while WCU compiled a .375 hitting percentage.

The final game of the afternoon again saw the two teams battle in a close contest. Western jumped out to a 10-5 lead before Georgia Southern cut the deficit to 12-9. The two teams then traded a pair of points before Western Carolina sealed the victory, 15-11.

The Catamounts were led by Sara Komosinski with 15 kills, 12 digs and a .333 hitting percentage. Christy Attebery finished with 14 kills and 16 digs while Bri Milan-Williams tallied 47 assists and 10 digs.

Georgia Southern was led by sophomore Lauren McClain, who recorded a career-high 20 kills and a .306 hitting percentage. Amanda Brooks finished with 46 assists and 14 digs while freshman Erin Martin registered 11 kills. Sara McCarty recorded 10 kills and 10 digs and Megan Lippi finished with a team-high 17 digs.
