Western Carolina edges Appalachian State 3-2 in the first match of the day

CHARLESTON, SC -- The Southern Conference volleyball championships got underway this morning with #4 Western Carolina defeating #5 Appalachian State 3-2 (4-15, 15-9, 15-6, 12-15, 15-12) at the John Kresse Arena in Charleston, SC. The Lady Catamounts are 20-13 and advance to face the winner of #1 Davidson and #8 UNC Greensboro on Saturday.

Appalachian State took a commanding lead in game one, taking a 7-2 lead before winning the first game 15-4. Western Carolina came alive in game two with the two teams battling sideouts before taking game two 15-9 to tie the match at a game apiece. The Lady Catamounts went up 4-1 in game three before ASU tied it at 4-4. Western Carolina then took a 6-4 lead and commanded the remainder of the game, taking game three 15-6 and a 2-1 lead in the match.

Game four proved to be a battle for both teams. App State took a 5-0 lead before the Lady Catamounts scored seven unanswered points to take a 7-5 lead. After a series of sideouts, WCU took the lead to 9-7 before App State answered to tie it at 9-9. Western scored two for an 11-9 lead when ASU answered to send the game to an 11-11 tie. The two teams exchanged sideouts before Western Carolina broke the tie with App State winning three straight points to send the match to a fifth game.

App State took a 7-3 lead in the rally before the Lady Catamounts scored four unanswered points to tie the game. WCU went up 12-9 with the Mountaineers cutting the lead to 13-11. With a service error the Lady Catamounts had match point but the Mountaineers held off the win one more point before WCU scored match point to take the final game 15-12. Christy Attebery led the Lady Catamounts with 18 kills and 10 digs with Pamela Stein and Sara Komosinski tallying 11 kills apiece. Karen Nielson led the Mountaineers with 18 kills and 11 digs with Claire Reynolds adding 15 kills and Katherine Dean recording 12 digs.

Western Carolina advances to the semifinals on Saturday at 1:00pm. Appalachian State finishes the season with a 17-15 record. All tournament matches are being broadcast on the internet and can be accessed through the Southern Conference website at www.soconsports.com.
