Davidson holds off Western Carolina comeback with a 3-2 win.

CHARLESTON, SC -- The Southern Conference volleyball tournament began semifinal action this afternoon with Davidson holding off Western Carolina 3-2 (15-12, 15-11, 5-15, 7-15, 15-12) at John Kresse Arena in Charleston, SC. WCU recovered from two games down to force a fifth game rally. Davidson advances to the championship match on Sunday.

Davidson took a commanding 5-1 lead before Western Carolina took a 6-5 lead. The Wildcats went on another streak, scoring seven unanswered points for a 12-6 lead. The Lady Catamounts held off the Davidson offensive, bringing WCU within two but the Wildcats took the first game 15-12.

The Wildcats came out strong in game two with a 7-1 lead before Western Carolina scored three more but Davidson returned the favor, taking an 11-4 lead. The Lady Catamounts got within two at the 11-9 mark before Davidson went up 13-9 and held on to take game two 15-11 for a 2-0 lead.

Western Carolina dominated game three, starting the game with a 13-1 run including 10 unanswered points. Davidson added four more points to its total, holding off game point at 14-2 before Western took possession and game three 15-5.

The Lady Catamounts took a 5-3 lead before Davidson cut the lead to two. The two teams changed possession eight times before WCU broke the rally with its sixth point of the game and scored one more before the Wildcats could answer. Western went ahead 10-6 and the match entered another stalemate when the Lady Catamounts scored four straight points for a 14-6 lead. Davidson added one more to the tally before WCU took game four 15-7, tying the match at 2-2.

Davidson took the first two points of the rally scoring before WCU tied the match. Davidson took the next point and held the lead, going up 10-5. Western Carolina battled back at the 11-7 mark to bring the Lady Catamounts within one at 12-11. The Wildcats held on to its lead to take game five 15-12 and the match 3-2.

Mara Mordini led Davidson with 17 kills and 23 digs while Brooke Bentley added 12 kills and 17 digs. Roberta Quis also recorded 10 kills and Rebecca Teichgraeber tallied 12 digs. Christy Attebery led the Lady Catamounts with 23 kills and 14 digs with Sara Komosinski recording 17 kills and 17 digs. Ashley Minton tallied 27 digs with Pamela Stein adding 14 kills.

Western Carolina finishes the season 20-14. Davidson awaits the winner of the Furman/College of Charleston match this afternoon to determine who the Wildcats will face in the championships. The championship match on Sunday will be televised live on Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast at 4:00pm.
