CULLOWHEE, N.C. (AP) - David Rivers passed for 302 yards and Fred Boateng
rushed for 135 yards as Western Carolina overwhelmed Lenoir-Rhyne 53-10 on
Saturday night.
The Catamounts rolled up 681 yards in total offense while limiting
Lenoir-Rhyne (2-1) to only 115. The win came just a week after Division I-AA
Western Carolina gave up 680 yards and was crushed by Louisiana State 58-0.
But against weaker Division II foe Lenoir-Rhyne, the Catamounts clicked on
all cylinders.
Boateng and Donnie Bryant, who had 93 yards on five carries, led a Western
Carolina rushing attack that finished the night with 344 yards. Rivers,
meanwhile, completed 14-of-20 passes and threw two touchdowns.
Lenoir-Rhyne kept the game close early, when Bryce Reiger kicked a 44-yard
field goal to tie the game at 3-3 late in the first quarter.
But Western Carolina (1-1) slowly pulled away as Rivers hit Lamont Seward on
a 67-yard scoring pass and Lee Williams scored on a 5-yard run. Josh Jones
added field goals of 52 and 27 yards to make it 23-3 at halftime.
Lenoir-Rhyne's only touchdown came on an 80-yard kickoff return by Terrence
Wilson.
